Was never big fan of DS but like so many other artists they were heavily influenced by J. J. Cale of whom I was a huge fan...even if you've never heard of J.J. Cale...I guarantee you've heard his music and lyrics performed by others...

Probably my favourite song of their's was Telegraph Road.

It might have made it big on AOR stations in the 70's, but it was way too long for mainstream radio in the era it was released.

I like pretty well all of their mainstream hits, but I consider Telegraph Road to be in a league of it's own....

Dire Straits was a band that dared to be different, just like Steeley Dan was a few years before them. I wonder if a new band today would be given the freedom to express themselves as much.

Distinctive and "accurate" (technically) is how I regard both of those bands; part of why I like them.

I like some seriously raw music too, but those 2 are at the other end of that spectrum.

Mark Knopfler is one of those rare finger-style players, and he's really good at it.

Probably he's not the only guitar-slinger to do it, but IIRC, he was known for hand-winding his own pickup coils - part of how he got exactly the sound he was after.

I was reading the comments on there, after posting that. One referenced "ultimate late-night driving music".

I've never actually listened to it mobile, and I'm not sure I'd want too...... it builds in such a majestic manner that unless I was on an empty highway with no speed limit, I'll stick with listening at home

These tunes are why I don't listen while riding my street MC..... engines on 2 wheels tend to "velocitize" enough on their own !
