Good examples of a bank saying "Don't come in to the branch".

Maybe they'd be happier if we just moved off-shore ?

Rgds, D.

I do some specific transactions with compass bank and they will hit me for a fee if I make too many deposits in the lobby during any given month. drive in or at a ATM machine or by a phone app is ok but go in the lobby and hand Something to the teller once to many times a month and get a fee charged.

I don’t like it but I’m not changing them either and for a good reason.

I was in NYC recently and asked a WF Teller to break a 100. They asked me if I had a WF account, and wanted Photo ID. I said, yes, multiples of both and left. LOL.

See I would have done it completely differently. I would have walked in and found the first person sitting at a desk and walked up to them and showed my WF card. And there would have been no problem.

You should try nice sometimes. It works.

What I really want to know is what the heck you can do in NYC that costs less than $100 anyway?

Banks are just trying to maximize the opportunities the data gives them.

A number of years back, Egghead software decided that they would offer discounts and deals to customer that joined their program (free, just had to sign up and then use the "reward" card). They sent out flyers advertised great discounts with the card. When people went to checkout in the store and did not have a reward card, the cashier often just use the top card in the pile (they had a pile of cards so people could join on the spot). The folks that did not want to join the program still got the great deals, but the cashiers messed up the giant database Egghead was building. They planning on upselling memory and disks to the customers that had previously bought a PC or selling a faster modem to someone that had bought a earlier model.. They had a large datacenter and lots of big servers, but hte data was garbage in, garbage out.. They never really recovered from that hugh gamble (some folks made a bundle by selling their Egghead stock early)...

Google and Facebook and many many others are gathering data, they are using powerful analytics to discover things we can only imagine. Targeted advertising is only one of many applications.

I should not have included the name "Wells Fargo" in the first post. The topic was never about the foibles of one bank brand, or another.

I didn't mean to, but I fed the trolls right from the start.... my bad!

Might as well get used to it. Trolls are a way of life on almost any Internet forum. Even sometimes unintentionally.

I think the broader topic is worthwhile - good banks or credit unions.

Sold a riding lawnmower today. Deposited the cash at my local bank. No questions asked, no ID shown.

What's the big deal with showing ID?
