Montgomery Ward - GREAT prices!

Since this is an old revived thread about defunct retail stores...
One store I miss is 'Western Auto' used to have some of the best prices for lots of items and common ammo and guns...as well as a bunch of other stuff...was later sold to Sears and then Advanced Auto Parts...

Another on is Radio Shack...they are not totally gone but disappearing in many smaller markets...

That's a good start on a list. How many other stores have you put out of business?

I remember the catalogs. Sears Roebuck, Montgomery Wards, JC Penny, Aldens, Spiegel. Living in the country it was a big deal to a small boy to see what was available, especially the Christmas catalogs.
But I must agree with /pine on the Western Auto. Would go there first thing when we went to town. Had everything there was to keep my young mind entertained.

Circuit city, zayres, rinks, harts, pace, few dime stores,...

Now we have unlimited online "catalogs" to look at. I know I spend a lot more buying online now.

Guess I'm an old fart too, but it makes me sad to see Sears and JC Penney going away. Craftsman brand sold to whoever and a ghost of itself. Woolworth. Radio Shack too. If Ace Hardware goes, am buying a rocking chair and will sit and grouse about "progress."

Do we miss them because there really was something special about them? Or is it just because they were part of our youth and are now gone like so much else?

(Getting this thing up to 100 posts will be dead easy.)

Isn't amazing how the retail world has changed? I remember a local appliance store talking about how their competition had a business plan to go out of business - that is they were selling the appliances for less than cost. (Of course they were talking about Best Buy) But what their competition was doing was planning on growing so fast their investors were will ing to take the earnings hit for future payout something that was an anathema to locally owned store that thought the only way was to continually make a profit.
