So it is easier to view news online.

Please keep in mind I know this.

Again, the reality is my 86 year old father prefers to read a newspaper, which is why I got it delivered in the first place, so HE can read it.

One of our daughters has not lived with us for over 15 years - she went to college and now lives in another far away city. Last year we started receiving two magazines at our home - magazines that she used to subscribe to over 10 or 12 years ago and canceled many years ago. She has no idea why these magazines started to arrive again. I thought it may be connected to advertising rates the magazines can charge - the more subscribers they can say they have, the more they can charge. It has been about a year now since the magazines (Oprah and Glamour) began to arrive and they keep coming. Go figure.

The unfortunate reality is that if you have the newsprint copy delivered you now have to (at least here anyway) recycle the newsprint. So it is easier to view news online.

That reminds me of my youth...

In Boy Scouts, we used to do paper drives to collect old newspapers and we'd get paid by the ton, then use the money to buy gear for the troop. The paper company would drop off what looked similar to today's shipping container.

So, my dad would drive his VW bus slowly down the street, and I'd knock on house doors and ask if they had any old newspapers that we could have. We'd get armloads at most places. Once in a while we'd get several tied bundles. But at one house, this little old lady said sure, but they're in the basement. So I go down there, and it's like the holy grail of stashed newspapers. Floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall, front-to-back, neat stacks of tied bundles, one bundle for each week, going back to the 1940's!!! This was the mid 70's. So, about 30+ years of newspapers.

I went out and got my dad. He came down and was shocked. We ended up contacting the paper company, and they ended up bringing out a container directly to the street in front of her house the next week, and our entire troop spent hours hauling them up out of the basement. Filled the container. Then we took several VW bus loads and pickup truck loads directly to the paper company ourselves.

We got some very nice stuff for our troop that year!

^^^ We did the same for sports equipment... canvassed the neighborhood.

One old guy would bag them and set the bags on the covered porch... it was a Bonanza

Years later I say him and mentioned the newspapers... he said NO MORE... had a truck load and no one ever came back asking... so he started putting 4 bags in the recycle each month.

Growing up... many of the old times would "Line" their garbage cans with newsprint... something I have not seen in years!

You're spot on.

Talking with my buddy whose wife worked at the paper, they'll keep you on their subcription list because the more paid customers they have, the more they can charge for their advertisting rates.

That said, read my previous post about trying to get an ad in the paper LMFAO

We started getting women magazines this year. We have NEVER, EVER subscribed to anything like this in the past, in fact, I don't think my wife has EVER subscribe to a magazine, yet we know get a couple. They just go into the trash.

Figure the magazine's are counting us as subscribers to boost their rates.

Later,
Dan

We've started out getting a paper daily many years ago. Paper arrived each morning about 5AM.
For some reason a few years ago the paper cut down to only printing papers for Sun, Tues, and Thurs. delivery. After reading the same news from Tues, and Thurs in the Sunday paper we stopped Tues and Thurs and for past couple years and only get the Sunday paper which is still delivered before 6AM.

I haven't been following the price increases (just paid the bill when it came and didn't notice the prices) but somehow over the years the Sunday paper had gone up from $1.00 to $4.50. I just received my bill for renewal and noticed another rate hike. Paper is now $5.00 so I have decided to cancel due to the rate increase. Besides, I can read all the local news online for free and no longer need a paper that has more ads than reading material.

Cancelled my suscription and the newspaper has been delivered the last two days now.

I feel like I'm dealing with a government agency here.

May end up buying my dad a laptop for Christmas just for news.

Tablet would be better. Bought my wife a Samsung Galaxy Tab A, 10.1 inch tablet and she really loves it. if you just want to browse the net it is better than a laptop. Lighter, less heat, batteries last a lot longer. Really nice clear screen. Android based. Cheaper than a laptop too.

Good point. Actually, since putting most of my documents on my iPhone, I can probably just let him use my iPad.

Well, there you go. Assuming he is still sharp enough at that age to operate it. Our recently deceased MIL, could not. But she had dementia. I hope your dad is doing well.
