More trouble for the Duck Boat.

The way beaurocracy now works is that a gov't agency will have you write a procedures and safety manual, approve it and then the onus is upon you to adhere to said manual.

When I owned an aviation facility we had to go the 'quality assurance manual route' and then rarely ever saw an inspector again.
B4 that we'd have an annual visit and the odd spot checks.
Mainly we had to be able to provide traceability to national standards with all sorts of calibration reports.
Food industry has also gone that route.

When I see this thread pop up again, and again, I'm thinking, how much more trouble can that poor duck boat have?

I work for the Big Pharma. Regulation in that industry has gone stupid too!

I rode them in Boston when I went up north. It was kind of fun really. I don't remember it being a bus looking boat like that though, maybe it was and my memory is just not correct?

The Coast Guard has apparently turned the case over to a Federal prosecutor in Kansas City.

The case was referred to the U.S. attorney’s office in Kansas City on Aug. 13 “to consider a potential criminal investigation and federal prosecution,” the Kansas City Star reported, citing a spokesman for the U.S. attorney’s office.

The July 19 tragedy occurred at Table Rock Lake near Branson, Mo., when an amphibious “duck boat” capsized and sank amid strong winds. Of the 31 people aboard the boat, 17 drowned, including five children. Nine of the victims were from the same Indiana family.

A separate criminal investigation has been opened by the Missouri attorney general’s office into possible violations of the Missouri Merchandising Practices Act.

The state of Missouri has now filed suit against the duck boat owners.

In my opinion the duck boats will never survive all of this.

I don't know... they are alive and well here in Seattle. We had a bad road accident killing 5 and injuring dozens 3 years ago. I think I posted already.

Want to know the difference between the two accidents?

I NEVER heard of the one YOU mentioned.

Make national news multiple times for the same incident, and God help you. You will be under a microscope and EVERYONE will be covering their butt to show/prove due diligence.

Don't know why. The one in Seattle was all over the news for weeks.

Yeah it was. But it was a road accident. Road accidents happen all the time. Look at that semi that blew a tire, crossed the median, and hit a bus head-on a couple days ago. All the time.

It's rare that you see 17 people drown in a duck all caught on tape. Both are tragic. One is common. The other not common.

I would also add that road accidents that result in fatalities are not only common, but in general due to a "legitimate accident". Per the duck boat accident in Seattle resulting in the loss of 5 lives, it seems the axle broke which could of been negligent on the companies part for not checking, but tires blow and things break all too often on vehicles that can cause an accident.

Like Moss mentioned, not only did you have 17 people drown with a video of the actual boat in the storm (kind of "odd" per American news to begin with added the fact that how many family members perished in that one accident?), but you have the added question as to why the boat was on the lake to begin with which can defy common sense given the limitations of the vehicle in water.

After reading up on the Seattle accident, the one question that I have is did the duck boad in Missouri have seat belts? Seems one of the key suggestions from the Seattle accident was that duck boats should have seat belts when riding the tour on the road. Seems the one in Seattle didn't have any and multiple people were actually thrown out of the vehicle. Since that accident happened 3 years prior to the one in Missouri, just curious if any Federal regulations were implemented.

All that said, I didn't remember about this accident where 13 people lost their lives in Arkansas on a duck boat...
