Just saw that in a signature. That's been my philosophy for as long as I can remember. I've been nearly fully self reliant for most of my adult life (no reason to go into detail). My greatest fear above all others is some sort of debilitating condition that eliminates that independence. I cannot imagine being in a state where I needed someone to help with daily and personal tasks. I would far rather be gone than be in that state of need.

It comes to most of us eventually however .....

I think that most of us feel the way that you do to varying degrees. My biggest fear was always of being blind, but as I get older and after watching Alzheimers take my father I realize there are many ways to lose our independence.

How long of time frame are you referring to?

A 30 year old relative had both arms in a cast from a car accident for several weeks, someone had to dress, feed and clean her. If that were you, what would you do?

I'm 83 and i'm into the 3rd week after spinal surgery (arthritis in L4-5), "No driving for 3 weeks, don't lift over 10 lbs, etc. etc....basically do nothing for 6 weeks. Getting a good taste of being unable todo what I like to do...and yes I am following orders 'with modifications'. "Not lift over 10 lbs' - I am using my garden tractor and a trailor hauling firewood to stock the wood shed. Moved about 2 cord already and 2 more to go. One stick at a time mostly under 10 lbs but some probably go muc more.

Sitting doing nothing when there are jobs to be done is pure ****.

^^ Keep in mind that one stick too many could leave you paralyzed and in the exact condition I fear most.

Well Dig, with 280 posts in a month, you seem apt at spending a lot of time on the keyboard as is. If you were crippled up and had a nurse to change your diapers, you would at least increase your post count

Sometimes God has plans for us we do not expect!

A good friend just got the news, Lymphatic cancer.
I wonder which is worse. that or dementia?

Hospice is a booming industry. Sort of like undertakers, everyone is a potential sale.

I am para pelagic from a motorcycle accident 45 years ago, I worked from a wheelchair as a electrical engineer for 25 years and am completely independent. It depends on attitude and whether or not you have it in you to move forward, I made hand controls for my tractors so I can use them, I do more than most able bodied people do, I don’t fear anything anymore..
