Thank goodness we have animal control laws and enforcement that will deal with unruly dogs and owners. Have you tried to call yours? I learned not to waste time talking to irresponsible dog owners. They always feel justified in their decision to allow their animals to run loose and wreak havoc. If you don't have pro-active animal control in your county they have left it up to the property owner to do what they have to do. I see not reason to notify or warn anyone.

We had a neighbor that worked night shift report to animal control that our dog as barking continuously (she was inside most of the time, only out to go potty several times a day.. we got a notice from animal control saying 1st warning (of 3), then fines. No appeal, no way to dispute. The notice said to call which we did, but no answer and no voicemail available.

Dog owners need to be responsible for them... We are. I can't speak for FL but in many northern states, you are allowed to shoot them if they are harassing your animals..

That's also the law in Indiana.

There was a dog chasing my horses. I went into the pasture with three things... A dog biscuit, a leash and a pistol. The dog chose wisely, and animal control picked him up. The neighbor that owned him kept him fenced in after that. :2cents:

I wonder sometimes how many people on this forum leave their dogs outside unattended, free to roam?

We had dogs running loose. They would not come close enough to get caught or within what I would consider safe pistol range. Our animal control in the county is a joke. Basically a drop off shelter.

Makes me wonder how many loose dogs just disappear. Sad that the owners are not more responsible. Our dog is on leash or teather.

Ours are 100% contained. 24/7. They are either in a fully fenced back yard, or they are in the house. Most of the time in the house, and 100% of the time they are in the house when we are gone. If one of ours managed to get out, we would be beside ourselves with worry until they were recovered, and steps would be taken to make sure it never happened again. Our dogs are like our children, little bit spoiled, and we look after them better than most folks look after their kids.

Up here, you can legally shoot strays that are harassing or killing LIVESTOCK. But it has to be livestock, not just "animals" or pets, or just wandering on your property. Obviously if a stray is threatening or attacking a person, then same applies.

The SSS rule applies up here in rural farm country. There's probably a county animal control agency, but I don't know of anyone that calls them over strays. It's usually BANG!, followed by some dirt work.

I have no regrets killing a stray dog that is killing or harassing my livestock. I have 4 foot net wire fence topped with barbed wire totally enclosing my property. A stray that somehow gets I that isn't bothering anything gets turned back out thru the gate, but if he is killing or has killed any of my livestock, he doesn't leave the property if I can stop him.
Wild critters, I cant stop from coming on the property, but if I catch them, they join the other strays that I have caught. If your county has a lease law (and almost all do), then legally there is nothing a pet owner can do it you destroy their wandering dog when on your property.

A neighbor had a pit bull that she allowed to wander wherever. It came to my other neighbors yard, attacked his small dog and then ran home. He had warned the owner several times about her dog but nothing stopped. He followed the dog home, shot him in his neighbors yard. Cops were called, but owner had no legal recourse. If the neighbor hadn't killed the dog, then the sheriff said he would have. Dog owner was fined also for not keeping her dangerous dog penned.
