Pull from the front or the rear?

/ Pull from the front or the rear? #41
If you look at from the perspective of a two wheeled tractor, it's fairly evident what mechanisms are at work.

Hook up below the rear wheel axle, Use as long a hitch bar as will support the load.

Think of it, if you wanted to "lever" the front of a tractor down from behind the rear end, What arrangement would you use?

Me? I would use a stout rigid bar sticking out the back, pulling UP.

A couple posts above suggest using a drawbar that is as long as possible. I'm wondering what the logic is behind "as long as possible". An extremely long drawbar could actually move the line of pull above the rear axle centerline.

The drawbar hole is supposed to be 14" from the PTO shaft on 540 rpm PTOs. I think that's the standard.

How could it do that? It's fixed below the axle.

There are a fair number of dead tractor drivers that would dispute your theoretical wandering if they could.

They can dispute it all they want, but there's probably a reason they died. This was purely theoretical, in case they're complaining; I've yet to see a tire that won't spin, chain that won't break, a permanently stuck object (talk to Archimedes about moving the world), or a tranny or engine that won't break...

Let me clarify. People have been killed, lots of them, in rear rollovers that happened without any parts failures in exactly the manner your theoretical analysis says can稚 happen. Others have been luckier and escaped death. You are entitled to your opinion, you just can稚 force your opinion to erase fact.

I agree that the rear drawbar is best. The 3 point is a poor choice. The front is OK in some situations. If you are moving a wagon, You will be able to control it much easier if hooked to the front. Weight and situation come into play. I would not be very concerned pulling an 500lb log with a 4000lb tractor on level ground. Pulling a loaded trailer or wagon on a wet hillside no matter how you hook it can get scary in a hurry.

Well duh, the "theoretical analysis" relied on nothing at all breaking, which is why it remains purely theoretical.
Nobody takes such things seriously, except fools and philosophers.

Good reason not to take your keyboard diarrhea seriously.

The way I was shown was there's the draw bar under the tractor's rear axle, sometimes also called a swinging drawbar. Then there's the drawbar with the multiple holes in it that goes between the 3pt lift arms called the 3pt drawbar, or spreader drawbar. I was told to not pull from that 3pt drawbar, only the drawbar under the axle.

Anywho, let's be careful out there....

What is the 3 point drawbar used for if not pulling "something"?
