Peruzzo Fox Cross 1600 Ditch & Bank Mower Review

Sorry, Leon,

If I have to do all that I'm selling the mower and go back to the rotary. It's worth my time and money.

I agree, all these hidden costs to running a flail mower...
I would be inclined to use a impact wrench with a 6 point socket (given that 12 point sockets are evil and their primary purpose in life is to round off the corners of the fasteners that they are used on) and a wrench to remove and install the hammers.

Thanks for your pm response Terry. I thought I would ask my question so everyone would see and could respond. Do you think the Y blades would be better for tough tall-thick-grass/tough weeds rather than the "hammer blades"? I'm assuming the hammer blades are really for brush????

Hello CJ4,

The hammer knifes are a general purpose knife for mowing, orchard and vineyard work.

The Y blades which are the Heat Treated Side Slicer knifes which are the best overall flail mower knife for that type of mowing duty and you will be able to recut the material as well to allow it to break down and dissolve faster into mulch.

Hello Terry,

I was describing what I would do simply as the 12 point sockets and ratchet wrenches are what I would want from my past experience with tools needed in mining equipment.

If you have the room an air ratchet and box end wrench may be all you need to do the work. For what its worth our fellow member powerscol uses an angle grinder to sharpen his hammer knives after he has elevated rotated the mower to the vertical position.

The cast hammer knives last a long time and put up with a lot of abuse.

I have a smaller Chinese version of Terrys ditch mower with the side slicer blades (Y blades) and only have touched up a few of them in the three years I have been using this mower and I do hit rocks but the blades hold up real well. Also I don't sharpen them to a fine point, I leave a flat edge on the blades. But to be truthful lately I have been running them dings and all and haven't really noticed any difference.

What do you think of your chinese flail mower?

I really haven't had any problems yet. Before I used it I checked all the nuts and bolts and discovered a couple bolts that were either cross threaded or not tapped properly so I retapped them. Also the rear roller has grease fittings that do not appear to take grease, however the bearings are sealed so I will just wait and if they go bad I will replace them with greasable bearings. Other than that it runs smooth, no vibrations and does a good job cutting.

We do not have rocks but have used now second boom mower with flail cutter head and yes end up with some cutters dinged but not enough to have had to replace or resharpen nothing of any amount.

New guy here. I have a 2038r John Deere. Seriously thinking of buying the Peruzzo 1600. Was wondering if you have used it in the 90 Degree range. I am especially wanting to use this to trim brush back of my trail through my 10 acres.
