How to discard old motorized equipment?

About 10 years ago my father decided to clean out his barn, which has been collecting detrimous since it was built about 60 years earlier.
He was really dreading it so I took a ride down to help. I had a good time; there was also a lot of old stuff in there which we didn't throw out and I didn't know that we had. (Or what it was) I had never seen a wagon jack before, among other things.
We filled a dumpster with junk, and there's still plenty of stuff we will need to get rid of.

I put stuff at the end of the road and when I wake up the next day, its gone. Sometimes I mix in some junk or scrap and put an "all or none" sign on the pile and the next AM, it's all gone to a better place. It's magic and the blend of good and bad stuff must be irresistible to a lot of people. This has worked 100% of the time for me and my pain of dealing with unusable clutter is gone.

Years ago I had a TV repair business. I threw a bunch of sets away at my in-laws house close by the day before trash pick up day. They said they were awakened at 2am, people fighting in the street to get them.
Another time I had this huge rear projection set in my parking lot to dispose of. Days later it was still there. So I made up an invoice, wrote "paid in full, hold for Mr. Johnson" taped to it. Next morning it was gone!

FreeCycle -- a sort of Craig's List for anything you want to give away -- stopped letting people post "curb alerts." These were where you could post a notice that you would be putting a bedroom set out for anyone to pickup at a certain time and day. Apparently so many people were responding that arguments and fights would break out.

That is funny.

In my old neighborhood there was a once a year garbage pickup. Put anything on the street and they would come and get it. On the afternoon and evening before pickup day, the vultures would start circulating. I had a smashed up dishwasher with the motor removed placed on the street. It went into the huge trunk of a 67 Cadillac as someone else's treasure. And it had a lot of company in that trunk.

That for me is the best feeling - seeing someone use something useful rather than throw it away and who's to judge sometimes what is useful? Yes, my youth was spent working for the stuff I really wanted (like blue jeans and cowboy boots at age 13 ) because my father was disabled and they didn't have the money. Paper routes, picking rocks, bailing hay, washing dishes in the restaurant. My grandparents were farmers - uncle a blacksmith and they farmed with horses through the 70's. Frugal I think is the word...
