Mustard yellow gear oil.. Help please

/ Mustard yellow gear oil.. Help please #21
Rather than use an oil based product to clean it out, I suggest using something that mixes with both oil AND water...alcohol. Fill it with isopropyl alcohol and run it a little then dump it. Repeat until it comes out clean.

See post #7 for this suggestion.

Not sure I view outboard lower unit oil as being any better. If you drain a lower unit and there are signs of water (milky, etc) then you got big problems. I don't think anybody ever feels like they are OK in that situation, or that the special gear oil was helping.

Per my post inn the attachment page. I bought a used Bushog 3210 shredder. I knew the gear boxes had water when I purchased. Figured I would drain or suck out and all good..
I spent most of yesterday doing that. I would run about 30 minutes then suck out the oil with a marine engine oil pump. I went through 5 gals of oil and could not get the oil to look any better. Short of lifting the cutter and laying down upside down.. I don’t want to do that.... What are the suggestions of getting rid of the water/oil mix that’s below the gear box that I cannot suck out?
Kerosene or Diesel is what I read to use but then how do I get that out?
Oh and by the way gear oil stinks......lol

Help appreciated..
These gearboxes are so understressed in the average mode that a water oil emulsion is not much of a problem. My JD bushog is almost 60 yrs old. It has had a very hard life, most with some water contamination. The gearbox has never needed work. At this point the seals dont hold oil so I use light grease in the box. Cornhead grease is optimal.

Good info.. I’m going to quit worrying and get to shredding.. Ha thanks..
