Has anyone experienced the finish mower rear wheels damaging the grass on turns? Have you done anything about it? With all the rain we have had the ground is soft and the damage seems worse this year.

Yes, if I articulate the tractor while not moving forward or backwards, I'll get the rear wheels to carve a nice arc into the grass. If it's particularly wet soil, it'll do it if I'm moving slowly. However, I find that if I keep my speed up while turning, it doesn't damage the lawn. So, I just try and be careful and be sure I'm moving forward or backwards when turning and that eliminates most of it.

I know many years ago, someone bought a caster kit for a (I think) coroni ? mower deck and put it on there. They had to move the mower mounts on the deck further back, to push the mower out further away from the machine to make room for the casters between the deck and the front wheels of the PT.

I wonder how the casters on the rear of the mower worked out.

I thought all finishing mower decks came equipped with front and rear caster wheels.

I have caster wheels on the front and rear of my Woods finishing mower. They work great, however with all the rain we have had this year, nothing is going to correct scuffing the grass/ground when making tight turns. Though it really helps to make gentle, sweeping turns on soft ground if you have the room.

Moss,
If you could have any new power trac of your choice, at no cost to you, which model would it be ? Disregard your existing attachments. New attachments would accompany the new machine.

Ok, I had no idea what a PT finish mower was. I just took it for a different make of 3Pt. hitch finishing mower.

Now I know. :)

PT425

It fits my needs best.

Now if you ask what one would I want for a 2nd machine....

I'd have to pick the 1460. ;)

I have a video of it somewhere where I'm cutting an honest 13' high area of weeds. I stood on top of the canopy and reached up as high as I could and still couldn't reach the top of the weeds. The canopy is about nose height to me, so about 5'6", and I can reach 8', so that's 13' 6" weeds. Wish I could find that video again.

Here's an old time lapse video of me around 2002 or 2003 so it's grainy as heck. Using the PT425 with 48" brush cutter clearing 5-6' weeds in a small field. What I like best is that it mows everything down BEFORE you have to drive over it. Makes a huge difference.

High Jack my thread! I will bite. I test drove a 425 and 1430 a couple years ago and for my 10 acres the 425 is best. Being small has advantages in many places.
