To me a dog is a dog. It is all in the training. Most people simply do not spent the required amount of time to properly train their dogs. They get them and soon find out how much work they are and tire of it and the dog becomes neglected and unruly. Any dog will bite. Some are just better at it than others The pit bull is in that group. Another thing about the pit bull...... it is my belief that the statistics can be a bit skewed for this breed because of populations reporting. (where they live and how many there are). They seem to be the dog of choice in the most inner city areas of the country. I don't think many of these dogs were reported on the "most popular dogs" list. But when you have a dog bite/attack in these most populated areas, you can almost bet it will involve a pit bull. Therefore skewing the results because of its prevalence. There are more of these dogs around than you think.

Wow, as the OP, I never realized how a very minuscule number of people who like to bloviate can turn a discussion into silliness. On the good news side, my two youngest goats that were injured are now back seemingly feeling better and back to bouncing off the walls in a normal matter.

Just for the record, it was two Pit Bulls (one identified by my Vet, the other by the previously mentioned neighborhood member), a unknown shaggy haired mutt, and a final dog that was not identified as any particular breed. I don't blame the dogs, I blame the people that at the very least figured the best way to get rid of their problem pets was to dump them off in the Forrest (this area is in the Ocala National Forrest).

I have 8 Dogs - 6 are rescues that we have been asked to keep (two by two different vets, the others by various folks) and a breeding pair of Bloodhounds. My entire property is fenced, and my three Dog paddocks have a 6 foot fence, buried 12 inches into the ground. These runs are each about 200 x 400 foot areas. They are never allowed to roam the rest of my acerage off a lead.

I go back to my original title for the Thread, Do you have control of your dogs... If you don't then stick to Cats for pets....

In my home setting I have great control of my dog. He is an 80 lb. black mouth cur and neutered. We got him as a rescue from a shelter. He had been returned twice already for some bad manners but my wife wanted him. At 9 months old he was already a hard case and stubborn as **** and wanted to be in charge of everything. I named him MF Jones. He certainly lived up to his name. He bonded to us within 2 weeks and then an even bigger problem developed. He became way over protective of us. While on walks on the leash he would bark and lunge at people or other dogs if they came near us and act aggressive if people came to our door. We figured out that he had learned that this is how he keeps people and other animals away from him.

A few months later we retired and moved to our property up north. We also bought a bar and grill that my wife runs. Where we live is very remote, out in the sticks is a good description. We live at the very end of a 1/2 mile easement on 45 acres of almost all woods. My neighbors yards are 21, 100, 240, 160 and 80 acres in size and I can only see one of their houses.

Jones has been coming up here for 2 years and now living here for over 2 years full time. A black mouth cur is the "old yeller" dog. The settlers used them for herding, hunting and guarding. Jones excells at the hunting and guarding and takes them seriously. I mow trails around my property and plant food plots. He follows me on my tractor or my rhino. He knows the boundary of my property and does not go off. My neighbor has 2 dogs that used to come on my land and scare off the deer and fight with my dog but have since installed an under ground fence. Jones never goes on their property.

I let my dog out 2 -3 times per day unsupervised to do his business. He patrols about 4 acres checking my out buildings and my 2 1/2 acre food plot which is my front yard. Unfortunately he will chase deer out of the plot but stops at the boundary, satisfied that they are gone. He does not continue the chase. If I am outside with him, I can call him off of a deer chase. He also runs off coyotes, racoons and the occasional bear.

Since I am the maintain the bar and grill, I have been bringing Jones with me every day to work. It took me almost 2 years to socialize him to other people. Now he has no problem with them.

It was a lot of work and very frustrating at times but MF Jones is the smartest, most loyal dog I have ever owned and I have pretty good control over him.

From a county run shelter with little local volunteer support, that is not the norm. I'm curious, what local state run animal shelter did they adopt from?

It would be probably be the norm if it were from a local volunteer human society organization where the pet was in foster care.

This is only from my own personal experience, having worked with both local organizations here in NC. That said, I understand that state run programs may be different depending on where they're actually being run. Why I ask where...

Not sure... Lancaster County, PA

Funny and sad, I've been down south so long, I forgot about the one great thing about living above the Mason Dixon line, animal shelters.

Night and day on the way unwanted animals are treated IMHO.

Plus, you reminded me I'll be having shoeflie pie later this week.

Do yourself a favor, get over yourself or jump back into reality and understand you're on a internet forum. Thread got sidetracked, it happens believe it or not.

Nice word bloviate though!

By the way, you're not a man of your word. Post #84, your own words "my last post on this". That's ok, it's a internet forum, just pointing out the irony:D FYI I was NOT the one that got your thread sidetracked on another topic, thank you.

Back to the subject of the trbread.... I wish I had control of my dogs bladders. 3 dogs, 2 older, seem to get me up about 3 times every night. The younger one has the small bladder... either that or she just wants to check for deer or rabbits in the yard. :rotfl:

It could be worse. Toward the end of her life, my last dog sometimes couldnt or wouldnt wake me up. A couple of times I would get up to use the bathroom without turning on a light and- oops, what's that squishing up between my toes?

Do all Pit Bulls come standard with a length of chain for securing the dog or is that just an add on for most Pit Bill owners?

Yep... You sure see a lot less dogs running up north, and they are better taken care of. The south takes some getting used to when it comes to dogs running wild.
