The kmarts around here are long gone but our Sears is not yet listed for closing. Pennys is gone too.

Some 30-35 ago I got some good deals when MW did their liquidation in the Memphis Tn area.

It seems assuming tomorrow is going to be like yesterday can bite in the end.

I'm curious as to why you would rather buy on brand name and not look at the tools closer?

More principal than anything else. Realistically I may not buy either. I guess it all depends, I've read that Stanley will keep the hand tools made in the US. That would be reason enough assuming the quality is good. I certainly won't buy a tool without looking over it first.

Savvy traders played a dead cat bounce this afternoon and came close to doubling their money in a single session...buy in low .30's (cents)/share at the open and sold this afternoon in the low to mid .60's...

I have a little different read on Stanley. Has to do with my work associations with their SE Asia and Australia operations. I shouldn't elaborate more here especially since it isn't really relevant to this discussion but I will say they don't appear to me anymore a US Brand than Craftsman. That said, I have been adding to my Stanley (Dewalt) collection more than I have any other tool brand. Craftsman has a stigmatism now that it is a has-been.

I have a lot of Craftsman tools, when I started feeling jaded towards them was when I could no longer be sure the wrenches or sockets I ordered online were USA ones. So I bought NOS on E-bay. You could see the difference in quality. I haven't had any issues with Stanley but of course I don't own much of it. I do like the idea of being able to go to a Lowes to get replacements, Sears stores are quickly disappearing. I should try and bring my worn out 3/8" ratchet for warranty, I ended up buying a Kobalt one to replace it. I do have some Asian made Gearwrench wrenches which I really like so not against foreign if the quality is good.

What really set Sears apart was that it developed its own brands, and many of those brands developed a reputation for quality. How many can you remember? Craftsman, of course. Kenmore. Die Hard. Weatherbeater. Toughskins. Silvertone. Any others?

Very true... Sears used to be about products and service. When the dot coms came around they missed the boat and then started selling their rolodex thus the push for Sears credit cards.
