I'm curious as to why you would rather buy on brand name and not look at the tools closer?
I have a little different read on Stanley. Has to do with my work associations with their SE Asia and Australia operations. I shouldn't elaborate more here especially since it isn't really relevant to this discussion but I will say they don't appear to me anymore a US Brand than Craftsman. That said, I have been adding to my Stanley (Dewalt) collection more than I have any other tool brand. Craftsman has a stigmatism now that it is a has-been.More principal than anything else. Realistically I may not buy either. I guess it all depends, I've read that Stanley will keep the hand tools made in the US. That would be reason enough assuming the quality is good. I certainly won't buy a tool without looking over it first.

Very true... Sears used to be about products and service. When the dot coms came around they missed the boat and then started selling their rolodex thus the push for Sears credit cards. What really set Sears apart was that it developed its own brands, and many of those brands developed a reputation for quality. How many can you remember? Craftsman, of course. Kenmore. Die Hard. Weatherbeater. Toughskins. Silvertone. Any others?
