New garage and home build

They seem to not mind a lot of posts in the basements "round here". Never seen a steel (basement) beam in any residential const. since I've been here, where it was the norm down south.

Steel beams are quite common around here. My house was built in 1964 and has one the whole length of the house.

When we designed our dream home in January we had I-joists and steel beams but then found out they wanted over $300sf to build that here. We had to buy this "spec" and change it so that we can move from one home to another without a mortgage or dipping into savings.

Maybe if I eliminate my 1400sf garage we could get more goodies in the home......... Ya, like that's gonna happen. :D

Pix I wasn't making a negative comment and usually you can incorporate a wall or portions of one to hide the posts in. I just found it odd I never see steel here in ME. Just about 100% of homes ranging from "row" or "town houses" up to the Mc Mansions all had steel down in the mid Atlantic region, and I used to see about 500 of them each year! Those production builders are not known to spend any money on things that didn't help sales.

I hear you... My wife and I did the same, except I elected to find and buy the right house / property instead of build it, and I'm a General Contractor. I knew I couldn't afford to build the house wifey wanted and the square footage. Took a few years, but we bought an amazing house on 90 plus acres that I could never afforded to build. 5,000 sg ft living space, a 2,000 sq ft finished basement, a 40 x 40 heated shop... and all that for a bit over $ 100/ sq ft...

Good deal Stepp. Love the idea of that much acreage.
My wife said the only way she'd go for an older home is if it was on a nice lake but all we could find was a great lot with a camp or a 60's-70's home that needed to be gutted. We're Lucky and we realize that.

It's all about what works for you. We left our home of 20 years where we had raised our 4 children without hardly blinking. Wanted to set out on our new adventure of empty nesters... But, I'm not retiring anytime soon, so we may be in a bit different situation. It looks like you are off to a good start so enjoy it...

The walls are going up, delayed by rain. Still waiting for the trees to be clear d for the garage.
