I was on my way this morning to a 7 a.m. eye doctor appointment, and of course that was long before daylight. I was on a street with 3 lanes each direction; 45 mph speed limit. Suddenly the car in the left lane, and one in the right lane hit their brakes. And almost at the same instant, I saw a big black dog in the street, standing right on the divider line between my (center) lane and the left lane. When I saw him, I was right at him, too late to react, brake, etc. The dog stood still and did not get hit by either car. What would one of the driverless cars do in such a situation? The dog was not in my lane; just on the line.

Funny thing. Years ago the local dairies had semi autonomous delivery systems. Wagon was loaded in the morning, routeman drove to the designated area, horses knew every stop for the delivery to be made with no input fron the driver.. Worked well.

All gone now, but something like 100 years ago, the small village near the farm my Dad was born on had several small hotels/taverns. More than one farmer woke up "on the wagon" late at night, because the horse was stamping at the farm gate, wanting to get back into the stable.

Not easy to program, for sure.

Obviously, it would have detected the situation way before you did and slowed down so as to avoid the situation you found yourself in. If i was driving, probably would have found myself is hoping I'd do as well as you did and the dog didn't move as i went by.

The government is pushing and private industry is putting all its efforts into this driverless car situation. I wish there was just half this much effort being put into improving our roads.

We will end up with the latest technology going into driverless vehicles and road so bad that they can no longer be driven on.

I know people who argue that you shouldn't try to avoid an animal, as it increases your chance of having an accident. While this may or may not be the case I will still do my best to avoid it.

The government is pushing and private industry is putting all its efforts into this driverless car situation. I wish there was just half this much effort being put into improving our roads.

I wish that "they" would put half of that effort into teaching people how to drive. Common lore right now is to blame cell phones, but they are just the tip of the iceberg.

One fact that is not being realized is...we are just at the beginning of applying AI...

AI will develop faster than any industrial technology of any ever before...

today's driverless cars are like the Wright Bros. first airplane...

But can AI pass a drug test?

I expect this will be a driving force moving AI forward.

People I talk with today that are in transportation say they have openings but finding an applicant who can pass the drug test is their first hurdle in filling openings.

Even new-tech auto companies like Tesla don't have a great record when it comes to security, IMO.

As more driverless cars hit the roads, they will become more of a security target. Shutting down an Uber fleet, would make your bones as a hacker.......... Shut Engine Off, Retain Steering Control would be a relatively benign hack...... worse scenarios are easy to imagine......

Any guesses if the military will allow widespread use of driverless vehicles....... ?
