Snow Ready for another Buffalo winter.

Can稚 lose with them chains!

Do you remember the time Buffalo got 7 FEET of snow? And at the same time not even one snowflake here in Toronto, just in the North side of Lake Ontario. (On a clear day, you can actually see Buffalo from the CN tower in Toronto.) Weird.

When that moisture from Lake Erie travels east and hits the cold land mass at the end of the lake, it dumps snow on Buffalo. The geography at the end of the lake is such that Buffalo can get a couple feet (or 7'!!!), while Niagara Falls (20 miles north) or Grand Island (7 miles north) gets nothing.

Sort of like how the Tug Hill area of New York on the east end of Lake Ontario gets dumped on.

I'm in central NY, and I know the lakes are still rather warm. I'm kind of nervous that we are going to get a lot of lake effect.

Unfortunately the only way for me to move snow is using the snow blower on my tractor. I have no place to put the snow.

I'm originally from South Buffalo (right at the border with Lackawanna). I remember quite a few 'Big Ones'. My only suggestion is making sure your garage door opens and you can get the plow started as soon as you drive out. During the Famous One, the snow drifted higher than the entire house. Could not open the doors because the sleet had frozen them shut. Then there was a wall of snow facing you when we got a garage door open that went from the ground to the roof. SHOVELED the 8' off the driveway and then the National Guard filled the drive back up with a railroad style snow blower. It ate all the garbage cans on the street and a yellow Pinto. "Don't eat yellow snow" was the joke of the WEEK !

Now THAT’s a snow story.

That is why you always point your best snow weapon towards the door before the big one hits.

First, that is way too clean a garage!!!!

Nice set up. Depending on your property layout, and type of surface, a plow may have problems with the kind of snow falls Buffalo can get. But it sure beats having nothing!

When we are going to get more than 10-12 inches, I go out and do a first pass when there is 5-6 inches on the ground. I am using a pickup with a plow...no chains. The problem with a plow is having a place to push the snow. I will typically have banks over 6 ft high and I leave enough real estate to pile it up in front of the older banks.

Again, nice set up.

Looks like LES is going to be firing up this week when the cold front hits. Have fun!!

Those chains made all the difference in the world. With a small tractor, you don't have enough weight to keep a straight path. The snow bank will push you. Front chains will allow you to steer.
