Second shift crew putting siding up. My 82 year old neighbor helping me with the siding, up in the lift, down on the ground, he has no fear and can often run circles around me.

Starting to get darker earlier here so lights are a necessity.

You can also see the Mechanical contractor's truck in the yard working late. Great team of people and really went the extra mile.

Fall mushrooms are starting to pop. Maybe good with eggs? I think I'll wait until after the build to try them.

Drywall was contracted to be complete by Oct 8. Today we are: 80% hung and 20% mudded. No way we will be in this place before it is too cold, our cottage where I work from home during the day and we live is unheated and uninsulated. We have no winter home to go to anymore as it is sold, pressure is on. Our preferred original drywall contractor had a cancelation and can fit us into schedule now. Paid out current drywall contractor for work completed and moving on. They did good work, just not fast enough.

Finishing up soffits and adding some shakes, rain or shine during a lunch break from work.

When I approached my friend and Architect that we wanted to build a new workshop/house he thought it was great. Then he figured out that we meant WE would build it and he thought we were nuts. He took our drawings and made them into a set of plans we could get permits, estimates and build from. Today, he decided to come up and lend a hand. Really appreciate his touches that I would not have thought of and was glad he could be here to see it come to life.

Continuing siding and trim on the West side.

I'm enjoying the pics and seeing your progress. Looks like you guys skipped out on sleep to keep working instead!!!! The shingled look on your gables is a nice touch to break up the wall.

I have lost many hours of sleep pondering Smart Siding. When I do dose off my thoughts turn to nightmares about it.

If the warranty requires three coats of primer and paint on cut edges does it also require that on every nail? Isn't there a lot of room for error and failure?

Around here cement siding used to be the thing to do
Now nobody does it. Too much maintenance. Is Smart Siding going to be any easier to maintain? Isn't it going to rquire extreme diligence in regards to painting?

Very nice build Ed!!! Thanks for all the updates and pics!!!

My wife and I got certified online for installing LP SmartSide. After that we decided we would not trust anyone else to do it. We feel really good about how well it is coated, sealed and cascaded for water runoff. We not only painted nail heads, we caulked them if they were indented a bit. I don’t lose sleep over the siding and many have been by to admire it.

We did the horizontal LP SmartSide on our house in Hudsonville about 3 years before we sold it. We had that installed by a siding contractor.

"Too much maintenance"....... on James Hardie cement siding?
There is a technique needed to prevent sloughing along the bottom piece (where it meets a flashing), but knowing that, I like it.
I just sold my 13 year old ocean front summer home in Canada with "Hardie board" (Cabot solid stain), and the siding still looked like new.

That's how I would do it too Ed. I have an excellent builder that is very detail oriented. If I used Smart Siding I'd still follow him around checking details. If there are any leaks they are gonna be destructive.

Thanks for your response.
