Two weeks ago I changed the oil on my BX23 (750+ hours on the clock) and had to use some Amsoil Signature 5W/40 (I use Amsoil in my Ram 4500 Cummins) because I was out of Kubota 15W/40. Now I smell burning oil every once in a while. No smoke, just the smell.

Should I switch it back to the Kubota Oil? I assume the Kubota oil is conventional. The Amsoil must be so slippery and slick that it is getting by the rings in tiny amounts.

Or do you guys think it is ok until I do my spring oil change in May?

Should be fine, personally I'd prefer the 5W-40 to the 15W-40 especially in the winter in NH or for that matter most anywhere.

Thats good to know. I'd hate to drain it out and refill Since the Amsoil is around $34/gal. The tractor does seem to run a bit smother these past 4 hours of run time.

My BX23 owner's manual calls for 10w-30 or 10w-40. I think your Amsoil 5w-40 will be fine, especially now that colder temps are here.

I would run it until May, but monitor (as always). Are you sure you aren't burning off spilled oil or grease on a hot part?

Ya well my 1423 calls for 10w-30, an I am using Amsoil 5w-40. An no smell at all.

JMHO -but, as nikerret indicated - I bet you have spilled a bit of the new oil and it's simply burning off. Carefully try this. Run the engine for about five minuets. Stop it and put a clean WOOL sock over the exhaust - secure with a nylon zip tie. Turn the engine on again. Don't burn the sock or let it catch on fire. Let it run for another 3 to 4 minuets. Stop everything - remove the sock and smell. Can you smell burned oil on the sock. I'm betting - at the most - you might smell diesel smoke smell.

My guess is spilled oil. I can't imagine oil slipping by anything. I use 5W40 synthetic in several kubotas and no problems.

I think the smell has more to do with your work practices and housekeeping during the oil change than the oil itself. All it takes is one drop of oil from a funnel or whatever onto an exhaust manifold, muffler, etc. to create a big stink.

My guess you haven't seated your rings as yet and the thinner oil just slides by them. No way would I drain it. The 10W rating on oils is for a limited range. If you go to your owner's manual and look in the viscosity chart, you will find that the 10 stops long before you run out of lower temps. Thin oil helps in initial lube requirements at startup. Big dogs in the business of selling equipment and others that maintain it say that the majority of your wear on your engine occurs at initial startup....before the oil gets circulating........this is coming from a thicker is better guy that learned his lesson on his new Ram Hemi.....badass engine.......with WARNING that you had better use 5w-20 or else......course 0 beats 5 but not everybody makes 0 like Mobil 1 does.
