Thanks. Its missing one sticker which I replaced today in these pictures. It is supposed to have a battery sticker under the bottom side of the reverse switch. When that switch is moved in the down position it closes a relay and that is powered by the cigarette plug and then completes a circuit from the trailers battery to illuminate the light to prove the trailers battery is charged to some amount and wired properly.

Pretty simple to build. Here is a list of supplies.

Project box
3 SPDT switches
Indicator light
Relay
Cigarette Lighter Plug (male)
7 Pin Trailer Plug (truck side)
Fuse holder and 10 amp fuse
Miscellaneous wire I had at my shop

Then all you need is a soldering gun or a bunch of crimps for the terminals. I soldered mine so it would have less chance of having issues later on.

Here is my attempt at a schematic. I am sure some one can clean it up and make it more professional looking than I did but here it is none the less. I am not a electrical engineer by any means, just a dumb old pilot and part time boat/trailer sales person. I can figure things out none the less.

The position of some of the functions are different than on my tester box but it does not matter where they are. All that matters is they are wired correctly.

I priced out some of the materials to build this tester - box, switches, connectors, plugs, etc and figured it would be about $55. So I check to see if there were any on the pre-made web, and found one for only $80. I sent off for it and the little thing works great. If anyone is interested here is a link to their site: Trailer Light Tester – GOT LIGHTS?

There are very inexpensive 7 pin testers on the Amazon, and e-trailer sites.
Are those testers no good?

Not sure which ones your talking about. And to tell the truth, I haven't tried those other testers. A coworker at another location had the mutt tester which I tried and liked, so I purchased one to use in my shop. As far as the 7 pin testers for vehicles, I purchased one from Matco. Happened to be looking at some other stuff and saw one sitting there, so I picked up a 7 pin tester and the 5/4 flat tester as well.
