Exactly. It can hide a multitude of sins. That does not mean texturing is bad, I had one house where I liked the heavy textured look. Many architectural styles can make good use of it, but my general preference is for smooth.
In not all cases did texturing and popcorn hide bad work. My current 1988 build house had non asbestos popcorn ceilings when I bought it. We took off the popcorn figuring the ceilings would need a lot of work. To our surprise they did not, the original crew did a good job.
