Thanks for the info on the Irwin locking chain clamp. Took a quick look, will check it out further. Doubt it would have been enough for this situation since needed a huge amount of leverage as well as grip.

In an earlier post I mentioned how seemingly simple tasks have a way of becoming complicated. Turns out not just complicated but messy. Yesterday evening finally had time to add the 2.4 gallons of oil that the manual called for. In checking with the dipstick afterwards looked exceptionally over filled. Later googled situation, etc. In googling situation later came across a tractorbynet post where turned out that amount specified in his manual was incorrect. Spoke to my dealer this afternoon. Tuned out that my manual was incorrect also. Takes 6.3 quarts as opposed to close to 10. Dealer was very apologetic. Said manuals often get translated incorrectly.

Went to O'Reilly's Auto Parts and bought a $16 transfer pump. Did not work at all. Decided to drain a gallon out into a gallon container and add any more if necessary. Seemed like a good idea at the time since there are two reservoirs with separate drains so I figured that there would not be much over a gallon if any with filter taking some. That was the first mistake. 2nd was not widening the funnel opening which I was going to do. Realized mistake 2 when the funnel began filling up. There was very little clearance between the funnel and the drain. So fumbled trying to screw the drain plug in while keeping funnel out of the way. Seemed to take forever before I finally got it threaded. Oil all over hands, floor, etc. Back to mistake 1. Even after spilling all the oil there there was much more in the reservoir and ended up trying to thread the plug again. A little quicker this time but still another mess. Lesson learned. Should have drained all the oil out into my oil drain container and started all over. Oh well, finally got it done correctly.

Good news is that the manual does not call for another oil and filter change for 150 more hours. Unless of course that is another mistake in translation......

I've got a big ol' pair of channel-loc pliars (15", I think). The obstinate filters normally don't stand a chance. Fits better than a 3' pipe wrench.

Glad you are on the road again. That manual error was a mean trick to play on someone. I could picture in my mind the whole scenario as you described it. I think that drain plug removal thing, expecting to be able to control the flow, is a pretty common learning experience. Next time the service will go easy for you. You have paid your dues.

Ridgehiker,

Reading your adventure brings back memories of my first Kioti tractor oil change. Not sure what engine you have compared to mine; I use 2 gallons and it's just shy of the full mark on the dipstick. As stated already, the hydro filter is a m*&^%f&*#&% to get off. I used a good quality chain wrench and cheater the filter crushed but I got it off.:D

Good luck and nice tractor choice. I really am happy with mine.

Here is the obligatory tractor picture.

You're welcome.
Having serviced two Kiotis in the 'new' state of delivery I can yes it would've worked and yes they do work. Very stout units.
I had bought a auto box store imitation and the two channels the chain fits into, one of them popped of on the first tug!
Oh I had to put some a** behind it with the irwin model no doubt but it did pop loose! ans has held up, to two such conditions.
Now on the reinstall my first time I did a hand tight install. after a few hours of operations I noticed fluid on the floor.
A quick check revealed the filter had loosened up.
Now I install hand tight and use wrench to go about a 15 degree arc of travel for a snug fit.
Have not had issues since.
Glad to hear you're up and running.
have a great turkey day!

I bought a brand new Ford Fairlane in 1967. Back then I did all my own oil changes and a lot of other stuff too. Today it's a chore just to drive down to my dealer and let them do it. Anyway my new Fairlane was due for it's first oil change so I parked it on some ramps under my favorite shade tree and went to work. Oil plug came out fine and as oil was draining I started to take the filter off. Grunt, swear, sweat and cuss for a while after trying every filter wrench I had. By then the end of the filter was pretty mangled up so I got my biggest and baddest screwdriver and my biggest and baddest hammer to drive it through the top part of the filter. All was going well until the last time I hit the screwdriver. I had penetrated the first side of the filter just fine, then I penetrated the back side just fine and with the last lick I penetrated the oil pan just fine also.

A nice round hole in your oil pan ain't good. Having to drop the pan on a brand new car ain't good. Having to ask my buddy to braze up the hole I made ain't good. Listening to his laughter when I told him what happened sure wasn't good either.

Every initial oil filter change on my new equipment has been tough. I attribute the issue to the lack of an oil film on the gasket. Guy on the assembly line takes new dry filter from carton and screws it on clean filter base... You & I get to struggle it off. Any subsequent filter change has the oil dripping from the base to lube the seal.

Just wait until you change the hydraulic filter. LOL
The oil filter will seem like child痴 play.

Yepper. I bought a special wrench to get those suckers off.

And the filter instructions like the セ turn also tell you to lube the oring before installing.

Cat Fever, lovely looking countryside. Very happy with my Kioti as well. Not as large as yours but I was extremely impressed with how much snow would push just with the loader last winter. Did not need to use snowblower.
