Driverless Cars

Elec self driving cars will replace most privately owned cars in 20 years - you'll use an app to have a ride show up, subscription like. No need to own a car, pay insurance, maintenance, etc.

Think about what a mess those car interiors would be like after just a week or two of use!

Now you can watch ANYTHING on your phone ANYWHERE..internet gives you access to all human knowledge instantly.

Meh. Maybe, maybe not. The "tech visionaries" think they're the bee's knees, but what about the great unwashed? I can see how they might be a good thing for city dwellers, or even some suburbanites but country people? Not so much. If for no other reason than it seems horribly inefficient, never mind that country folk tend to be a lot more independent. My fear is that the government will mandate them, or at least make it increasingly difficult to drive yourself.

Yeah, the internet may give you access to lots of information...the downside is that a lot of it is dubious or just plain wrong.

Go further back...... according to the Jetsons, we should all have flying cars by now :)

I see electric as more of an urban thing.......... but, that's where most of the population is concentrated.

When I take certain roadtrips, I bang off repeated backtoback 1200km days..... can't see pulling that off all-electric anytime soon.

Look at the problems with bike/scooter..... share services....... many people just dump them anywhere.

No skin-in-the-game...... a lot of people can't be bothered to behave civilly.

They will be the bees knees for elderly country folk who no longer drive. Could make a big difference in their independence.

Considering that many who live in the country can't even get good internet service or off-air tv reception, do you really think there's a viable business model for driverless taxis? How large of a service area would be required to have enough population to make it worthwhile?
Let's not even get into the unreliablility of GPS in rural areas, or how these cars would deal with dirt or private roads that may not even show up on a map.

As I said earlier, maybe in the somewhat distant future this may become practical in urban or some suburban areas, but it's a loong way off in the country.

Check out this site, lots of articles on predictions from years past on how the future would look. Site hasn't been updated in a while, but lots of interesting stuff.

I would ALREADY trust an autonomous vehicle to be safer than many/most human drivers.
I am "coaching" a few grandkids through their road experiences in preparation for their road tests and I believe that (semi)autonomous vehicles are now WAY ahead of where they will be even 5 years from now.
Of course in that 5 years the algorithms and knowledge bases will be even better.

I went through this with their parents, that was scary too and there was MUCH less traffic on the roads then.

I think the race is already won, we're slow to admit it.
Hopefully FULLY autonomous vehicles will be here before I am too old to drive and before TOO many pot heads are behind the wheel (different rant, different threads for THAT issue).

Exactly. Self driving vehicles don’t have to be perfect. Just better than the idiot driven vehicles. The race might be already won but I predict between 20 and 50 years before self driving passenger vehicles become mainstream. Self driving trucks will probably happen sooner.
