That image Bob sent is fantastic.. I didn't know the pump gear had slots..
THAT makes it a bit more difficult to set the timing if you.ve never done it before..
Do u see anywhere in your manuals anything about "FLOW TIMING"..??

I don't have a manual personally, but there are a few online that I will go and see if I can find anything about "Flow Timing", but yeah the whole timing thing certainly wasn't made easy from the factory. That said they did it once so it can and will be done again, hopefully soon if ever stops raining here.

I feel your pain about the rain.. I woke up this morning w/ the flu & the back yard completely under water.. I never heard a drop..
Good thing all my work is caught up.. so I don't have to go out in this "stuff"..

Ok I finally found a day in between all the rain and selling a house to get out and work on the tractor. I took everything apart again so I could see all the timing gears. It seems very easy to set the timing up and I've followed all the directions I can find, and the once the engine is set I take the 3 bolts off the injection pump gear and the number one fuel line and turn the injection pump until fuel lifts up on the number one cylinder. Then I crank everything back together and bleed the system. The tractor will start and run for 30 seconds and then die. No matter what I do it will start only after doing the sequence I just mentioned and then run only for 30 seconds. Once I do this and it dies I pull the fuel lines loose at the injector 21mm nut and I'm getting zero fuel, and I also checked at the injection pump and no fuel. Is it possible that I got a bad injection pump from the dealer? When I turn the injection pump by hand it makes a really strange almost grinding noise at full compression, and like I said no matter what I do it sends no fuel out. I can't figure this out, and I've built hundreds of gasoline engines, but this little diesel has stumped me. Thank you for your help everyone I greatly appreciate it.

If it starts and runs good for 30 seconds, it will run good for 30 hours ............... if it had fuel. Check to see if your new lift pump is plumbed correctly. I assume you added oil to the injection pump.

I just checked the oil in the injection pump again and it's full. It's really weird that when I go through the whole timing procedure and manually prime the pump it will run until that fuel is out of the system and then die. When I use the primer system I can get fuel to the whole non pressure side of the system, but I'm not getting any fuel pressure on the other side of the injection pump. The only thing I can think of is that the pump is bad from the dealer. I plumbed it just like the one that came off, the only thing that's different is the primer on my original pump was on the opposite side and I had to switch the hoses around, it was a tight squeeze to move those hose but it worked. The dealer is really not much help, and I don't know if they will help me if this pump is bad. I will name them if they won't make this right, assuming it turns out to be the pump.

Will it continue to run if you keep pumping the primer pump? If the engine starts and runs it's highly likely that your fuel injection pump and timing are good. It sounds like the lift pump is the culprit. I'd like to see a pic of how you plumbed the lift pump with the hoses. You might have it connected backwards.

Also, if the fuel injection pump is any good you won't be able to pump fuel through it to the injectors with the priming pump. You will only be able to do that if the barrel and plunger assemblies are worn.

No it won't run with continued pumping of the primer, in fact once the primer pump has been pumped a few times you can no longer push it at all. The primer also leaks a bit once in a while which I really don't understand. The priming pump will not pump fuel through into the pressure side of the system at all. I will get you a picture of the lines asap, and thank you for your help it's greatly appreciated.
Edited to ad pictures, if they're not what you need to see please just let me know and I'll get you more.
