Good evening all. 42F for the start, overcast and light wind, very windy. Rain ended about1:30PM, wind is slowing down, and high temp is current temp of 47F. Today was conservation of energy day and dog sitting. Forgot to take for an afternoon walk. Did finish a Harry Bosch novel today.
Buckeye, glad to hear son got home ok.
Drew ok wretched food and no service, but did you have fun? ;)
PJ, interesting project. Keep us updated.
Bird that is one rich recipe !!

Funny, since Eric and L4N posted on those eco fans, a TSCO ad was on the side of my TBN page with one. I looked at it...$99 and says they "make their own electricity" is that right?

Wng, the fan proudly states that it was Made in Canada, so I expected you to get them at a better price than me, that is quite a bit more than I paid for an 810 model.

It does indeed rely on electricity to turn the fan motor, which requires a large difference in temperature between the woodburner top and the cooler air pulled in the back by the fan. Sandwiched between the hot and cold surfaces is a material that has a pronounced "Seebeck effect" (producing volts from a temperature difference). Thomas Seebeck discovered this phenomena almost 200 years ago, though he didn't quite understand it was electricity, he was more intrigued it deflected his compass when he shorted the ends together (he had made a heat powered electro-magnet).

It is said that the great Italian engineer/chemist Alessandro Volta (the man who invented what we think of as a battery) made the same discovery a few decades before, but no one really took notice as he was making so many other brilliant discoveries.

This company makes a woodburner fan driven by a Stirling engine. Except for the fan blades it looks an elegant mechanism, if, like me, you are fascinated by that sort of thing. Couldn't justify on price alone, but maybe as a working artwork Stove Fan - Spread the heat away from your wood stove

All summer long I have had an old, very battered hay rack that I was given, just waiting to be repaired. When I heard that snow was coming, I realised I should have sorted it much earlier in the year. Instead yesterday afternoon I was hunched over in a strong wind, trying to keep my hand steady enough to weld tubing that was more rust than steel. Maybe one day I will learn to manage my time better ... :confused3:

Bird, wish I was on your Christmas cake list.

PJ, no bugs, but still looks plenty to fret about building that guitar

32 with a forecast high of 34F. Wind NW 18 gusting to 26 mph. Mainly sunny.

The kitchen window opens up at the corner of the deck and there is a platform for the cats to rest on before they come into the house. It is that platform that I feed the stray cat on.
Yesterday morning about 4:30 A.M. the stray cat (we named him Benny, as in Benny the Bum) walked right up to me and smelled my fingers. That is progress. I do not think he is feral. I think he has a home and just wants the extra food we are putting out for him. Maybe he is being mistreated at home. We will never know and he isn't saying. He certainly looks healthy enough.

Today is another energy conversation day.

Have a good day all

Yep, as far as I'm concerned, that's a meal that can't be beat. I prefer cornbread with mine, but crackers, or even nothing at all with it is OK, too.

59 degrees in constant rain going up to 65 today as warm air and rain move Northward.
Two to three inches of rain predicted, on top of four inches I just poured out of the rain gauge.
Good day to stay inside, though I might go work in the garden shed since it will be warm enough.
With a metal roof on it, might sound good in there also.

Still have to fix problem with greenhouse floor being too low. Fills up with half an inch of water in heavy rainstorms, so I need to raise the floor
perhaps an inch. Bricks are too big; I was thinking just lay down ground contact 1 by 4s under the plastic floor, leaving half an inch between boards. I want to lift out the plastic grids and just lay something pervious in there to get height; have zero desire to dig the whole thing out again to lay brick. Plastic grids give secure very level base for current shelving. Cutting boards is easy and manageable for me. Trying to avoid any reraking, floor is now nice and level, just too low. Needs to be "temporary" installation, i.e. no concrete, and allow water to drain and not sit on floor.

hope you all have a nice weekend.
