I have an IT masters degree with a specialization in security. Rest assured if you have a bank account, a credit card, or any form of electronic connection to the internet there is WAY more information about you available than you want. You probably have no idea just how complex and vast the data gathering tools are in digital space. So if you are on it, you might as well just forget about it. The way I operate is to not give any information freely. If the anyone calls me I give them nothing. If I call them...well they as for verification and I give it. Ensure you have 2 factor authentication on every account you can. Sure it is a pain to login, but it is worth it. You vital information has probably been hacked and stolen 10 times over. Hospitals, retailers, banks...they dont update security until they get breached.

Think of it this way. A company has 5 IT security employees for 1000 people. However there are 5000 hackers trying to breach the firewall or exploit information. Who do you think wins? It is simply a matter of time. Trust me this place and your city/state is the least of your worries.

Sometimes people show up on here, self-identifying as ignorant on a particular subject. I have, and still am, on more than one topic.

Sometimes people don't know enough to post adequate initial data to get their questions answered....... ex. land profile and snow/ice conditions when seeking tractor chains...... You Don't Know what you Don't Know......That initial data will get requested of them, in the flow of the thread.

Location may help, with that early data, but not always.

Some States/Provinces have enough varied geography and conditions that you pretty much have to be Closest Town Specific to be dialed in to the local story, if you know it.

I'm of the tech gen that built the modern day internet. From the get-go, I was alarmed at the amount of data-mining going on.

Jst's story of wwwwaaaaaayyyyyyy to much info landing on FB is an example of N American police forces having to put out PSAs a long time ago saying "While it's great that you can afford to go to Europe for 3 weeks, you shouldn't be posting that your house is empty on FB". The application mental "stickiness" that is designed into apps like FB often causes otherwise sensible people to forget about common-sense.

So, some of us are uneasy posting location data..... but, as covered already...... all that we may be doing in closing the barn door long after the horse has bolted....... maybe that helps us sleep slightly better at night though :confused3:

Perhaps it falls into the He Who Dies with the Most Toys Wins bumper-sticker category, but IMO, automatically putting a long list of all the equipment you own in your Signature is also like hanging up a Steal Here sign.

No area is immune from thieves, but widely disseminated data allows mobile gangs to go shopping Wherever.

When I post a question, I try and build a frame around it, and sketch in the background, before asking for the central details..... so I'm all for people asking better questions - once in a while, location can be a key detail.....

Won't stand up to the Big Data engines of even yesterday, but Share Data Selectively, Not By Default, may slow down some of the petty criminals..... at least that is what I tell myself when I go to sleep ;).....

I'm super new to this world, but my neighbors all have MUCH bigger machines, so the widths, sizes and weights of implements aren't even close. But as I understand it, you lose capacity which is not something I'd be willing to give up for the sake of convenience. But then again, I don't change tools often enough for it to make a difference. I've considered a pallet fork (you know to help move the ones in the fields around a bit), but I don't need bale spears or anything else I can think of. I'm not even sure I'll ever take the FEL off unless for some kind of service. I have a way to strap the container cage/work platform in place, so I don't even need the forks for that.

Changing implements in nice. You should probably try it before you knock it. Go have fun working in the cold and wet to put on your pin on pallet forks.

Diggin It - look around on TBN, somebody near you likely has something listed in their Signature that you can go "borrow".

I just reviewed an old thread - Magnetic Cup holders - June, 2004. It was brought back to life by one comment posted yesterday. There is not much in this world that I could care less about than magnetic cup holders.<snip>
And most of us could probably "care less" about your concern for location. Your concern about location (and run on, long unpunctuated posts) seems like an attitude problem for a certified old fart. And I should know because I am one and both of them bug me also.

Jstpssng - - No, I do not think you are the least bit paranoid - just being careful - which we all need to be in todays society. However - if they( whoever "they" may be ) can find you - it surely won't be because you listed the state you live in. I may be a bit foolish but I can't see anybody finding me - even though I list - Amber, WA.

Heck - I've attached an aerial view map with red lined road - right to my first gate on the county road and folks still can't find me.

But, everybody's situation is unique and NOBODY needs to feel bullied into giving any info, anywhere, about their location if it makes them uncomfortable.

I just want folks to understand - some times location CAN be important to a helpful answer.<snip>
And like I responded in your other thread, don't worry about it. We don't have to respond to every thread that we can help people. There are a LOT of threads that run on and on where a solution looks obvious to me but I stay out of them because of lack of location info by the OP. Due to my work with the military I've several months of experience working outside in most every climate and soil condition.
I read people in Florida writing how best to plow snow then admitting they've never seen more than a few inches.
Due to my penchant for bargains I frequently read posts of needing a tractor of a certain size, I usually know of bargains in my "areas", basically the I81 corridor from DC to Mississippi, but ignore posters who don't put their location in.
Actually - it probably would be correct to say - if a person were really concerned about being identified and their exact location being found or certain information be ascertained - they should stay completely off any social media web site.<snip>
The erroneous idea that there are secure chat rooms is a complete farce. They are only secure to those who do not have the necessary software.
No, I'm pretty sure there are secure chat rooms, but they require a high clearance.

And it's worse than that. Wait until a couple of the BIG government databases where they store every bit that is passed on any network gets breached, your data will be all over.

Changing implements in nice. You should probably try it before you knock if. Go have fun working in the cold and wet to put on your pin on pallet forks.

I'd like to be able to follow what Drew's approach seemed to be - 1 tractor per implement.

Just make sure they don't have friends like mine, Mr. Mossberg and Mr. Winchester.

The current software being used by those collecting this data is truly awesome.

I stay off the ones that require personal information and are known to have sold it (having been in the news for one reason or another) which is part of the reason I limit my exposure to G. There are other search engines that aren't so nosey.

Wagtail, man I’ve been wanting to go to Tasmania to trout fish all my long life. Now that I know where you are, leave the light on for me. Oh, I’m near Augusta, GA. Just don’t ask me for Masters tickets.

I signed in to OR on to OR whatever - FB a couple years ago. Couldn't see how within a half hour, there were twenty people I didn't know, in the least, that wanted to "friend" me. Took half a day to figure how to permanent quit FB.

So - Newbury - I've been pegged as a COF. Well, I am. But just yesterday I found a TBN member older than I. Wonders will never cease.

As you age, the mind wanders - the fingers on the keyboard naturally follow.

OK - I can make the sentences and structure shorter and with more punctuation - however, the smell will still remain the same.
