In most fonts, zeros are a bit narrower than ohs; 0 vs O. When handwritten in a place where there may be any question as to whether it's a digit or a letter I always put a diagonal slash through the zero.

That makes sense. I wondered about the attempt to make a zero look like an eight.

Now if we can figure out why some like to cross the seven making it look like a dyslexic F.

I've lived in major cities and in small towns and everything in between - I've moved a lot. I much prefer the small towns and use "Countrylife" on most forums I'm on because it's the lifestyle I prefer, but it was already taken on this one. I started out with a Case 220 garden tractor, then went to a Kubota L235, and now have a JD 5055E. Still have all three tractors and they all still work although I don't use the Case much anymore, hence 3Ts being 3 tractors.

Military writing to cut down on any confusion between letters & numbers. A 7 with a line in it distinguishes it from a 5 or (in some cases) a 4.

It seems more common in Europe

Yep. Military is where I learned to put a slash in a 0.

Never thought I would "come out." I have a General class license. And my wife does as well.

There are more of us here than one would think. "its an invasion!"

With you guys isn't it more like an "observation"???

Listening to see what's going on? :)

Is that a UHF/VHF antenna on top of your beam?

At the very top is an old Hustler G6 2 meter vertical. The "funny looking square" next down is a 6 meter Moxon. 2 element beam. Then next down is the MA5B Cushcraft beam for 20, 17, 15, 12 and 10 meters.

Below that is the 80 meter OCFD, useful on 80 thru 6 meters. Not shown is a 6 meter vertical, and out in the woods is an inverted L for 160 meters and useful on 60 and 30 meters as well with a tuner.

Much activity on 6 meters in your area?

No local activity. Of course the winter E skip is going on now, and you hear the usual 500 to 800 mile sporadic E signals each day. And of course meteor scatter using MSK144 goes on every day.

Or a 1. I was a math major in college and have sloppy handwriting, I would always slash my 7's. I also slash z to distinguish it from 2. When you're writing out formulas you have to distinguish 1 from I and l so you have to put a "hat" on it, then you need to distinguish it from 7. You also have to distinguish 2 from z, 6 from b and beta. Kids today have word processors that makes it all easy. Although I can't imagine solving equations using anything other than pencil and paper.

Mine comes from my former life as a Navy Seabee for 33 years, retired as a CWO4. Coupled that with my current life around mt BX25. A slogan we have: "the difficult we do right away, the impossible just takes a little longer".The Seabee motto is "Can Do". Way back in the 60s; Campbells soup came out with a label "Canned DO" on an empty can; for Seabee memorabilia. Never could get my hands on one. Back in the old days the Marines had a bumper sticker "The Marines are looking for a few good men". Immediately some enterprising Seabee came out with one "the Seabees are looking for ALL good men" CNO put the kibosh on that real quick. Another item I never could get my hands on. The Octagon shaped utility caps mow worn by a lot of military are kept that way with a hat block device invented by a Seabee. He sold the patent to a uniform company for $1M. They have sold at least that many. Put in the hat stretch it out, spray starch to saturation, put in oven a 200 degrees till dry. I had one of his original hand made ones; don't where it is today.

You can take the man out of the Seabees but you cannot take the Seabees out of the man.

I also habitually put a line through a 'Z'... even the lower case 'z'.

(and, yes, I pronounce it "zed". ;))

Great thread, although its drifted from ID to writing techniques. No matter - both are interesting.

Ahh ok G6 I think I have one of them in the garage rafters need to haul it out and try it i guess would be a good antenna for the RMS station I suppose currently using an Isopole! How long is the OCFD ? I just built a HWEF 134' with a 49:1 balun works great 80-10 no tuner as well as on my MARS freq!! We use the same MA5B at the EOC here but living on the coast it gets very hard on beams so far we have rebuilt the EOC beam twice now in 5 years. My 2 meter 13B2 seems to be the only one holding up in the constant wind!
