Kubota doesn't list the thread size and I don't feel like ordering one for $2.50. This would be for front axle fittings. Surely it must be some standard metric size?

I know, or think I know that most loader fittings are 1/4-28.

I just looked at my parts manual and it only gives a part#. Buy one of the multipacks from tractor supply and use process of elimination. Always worked for me with any grease fitting.

Probably a metric bolt thread. My BX axle has no zerks. Haven't had to replace any on the implements yet. Surprised I haven't broken one on the BH or FEL. I have multi packs of SAE, Metric, and IPS types. They could also be the drive in type

Get the 100 pack of assorted metric sizes from Harbor Freight, Tractor Supply or Amazon. They are only $10 or so & you'll never run out of spares in all the sizes or angles.

The typical metric grease fitting is M6

I'm familiar with your dilemma. I also had one break. So - I simply order one of those assorted packs in both the metric and SAE thread types. NEITHER one worked - nothing fit exactly right.

I finally just took my broken zerk by the dealer, picked up a $0.35 replacement and problem solved. My only relief in this blunder was that I have 200 zerks on hand for most applications, except Kubota tractors.

Pretty much the right approach ! No matter where you look up the "correct" size it may not match the actual threads. Often they SEEM to match until you get in 2 or 3 turns and they bind or will go in no further, thus telling you you are using the wrong size. Buying the "100 assorted" is lesser of evils but creates a fresh problem -- now you have to sort through most of them trying to find a match. Such a pain. The industry SHOULD standardize on 2 or 3 sizes and abolish the rest. We won't live that long even if they decided to do it.

Look on the bright side, at least the business end of the zerks are all the same!

The nice thing is this is smaller than the standard 1/4-28 zerk thread, so, a little drilling and tapping....your all set.

Would I get metal pieces down in the hole?

You may, but there are ways to limit that problem like using grease on the drill and tap to catch chips. I use spiral fluted taps that bring the chips back to the surface vs driving them to the bottom of the hole.

The (new) 1/4-28 thread's drill diameter is .213.

The (original) 6mm nominal major diameter is .233.

So you will still have part of the old thread in your drilled out hole. And then you need to follow that old thread with a different pitched thread, if you can get them started together...

I might try that trick on some angle iron but not on a tractor housing.

Considering my luck, I'm going to stick the correct metric fittings.

Yep...do believe they are British.

The Fred is correct.
The smaller ones are M6 X 1.0.
Any larger tapered pipe thread fittings should be 1/8 BSP,very close to 1/8 NPT.
Good Luck!
