But whole sectors have been overtaken by east Europeans, on some construction sites not a word Norwegian or English is heard.

Looks like your immigration problem is on it's way. It will be interesting if you hold the same opinion expressed above in a few years.

Oh, we have a lot of them, in the last year's it has been a lot from Syria, we had the rater bizarre bicycle border crossing from Russia, the Russians banned walking over the Russian border so the Russians made good mony on old bikes...

So are Syrians primarily entering Norway through Russia? Is that a major thrust of immigration from Russia?

Well, Norway are a member of EU inner market, free flow of people, capital and services so at the moment not much to do except cancel the agreement, no real political will to do so, very interesting to see what happens to UK as they also have to find a way with EU whiteout beeing a member.

It was a lot there for a while, rumours that it was organised by the Russian government to get rid of refugees. The border is quite relaxed, Norwegian shops are very happy about the sanctions which has been put on Russia, a lot of people from Murmansk do weekend shopping on our side.

That money they paid in is gone, it supported the generation before them.

Social Security is in a interesting spot right now, the baby boomers are getting of age and there is less of a workforce in the generations after them to support the system.

Medicare is funded by social security

Well, third trip to the ER this year for one of my adult student/children today (she's fine). We met our deductible for the year many months ago. We'd be out about $20G this year alone in medical bills without insurance VS $2500 deductible. So pass that along to anyone that you know that's considering dropping or going without insurance.

Merry Christmas everyone and best wishes for the coming year.

I came late to the party, on this discussion. At my prior employer, ten years ago, I paid just over $3,600. US dollars. for family medical plan that included me and my 3 children. When affordable care plan kicked in, it jumped to $6,000 and then to, $12,000 annually. I changed jobs since then and now pay about $5,500 annually for a plan that covers me, My wife, and 3 kids.
in 2007, I had my appendix removed. That was over $20,000. Thankfully, I had insurance. That same year my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her surgery and treatment was massively expensive. I stopped keeping up with it when it blew thru the $200,000 mark. We had co-pay's for visits each week. I think the max out of pocket was around $3k per year. A couple years later, and the cancer returned and before she died, it had run up over an additional $300,000 in hospital expense.
I am 52. I have always been athletic. Running and lifting weights. Spartan races, triathlons, Mud runs, martial arts, etc. in 2015 I hopped out of my pickup truck and my ACL tore and my knee caved in toward the other. The bill was approx $38,000 to rebuild my ACL. That didn't include the physical therapy that I went to for 8 months. I had insurance. ( I edited the cost of ACL after looking thru some files here at home.)
You could get an infection, clipping your toe nails and have that run up $10K in hospital costs before you could even think about it.
Insurance is the sharing of risk. There have been many years that I have paid insurance and not used the insurance at all. I wouldn't be able to sleep without health insurance for myself and my family.
