Wow, WoodChuckDad, what a story! All that stuff would be free for us up here, but we keep hearing stories on the news like yours, and it gets really scary to think about how many in the U.S. have no insurance at all. I never did understand what happens when people like that get sick, and saddled with $$$ medical bills that they could never pay off.

My wife had some surgery one year ago this week. Her medicals bills are 1.5 million and counting. Even with insurance I am on the hook for a good portion of some of those bills.

How can anyone afford NOT to have health insurance?

It's not free. Someone is paying for it.

You got that right!

But somehow some folks think things are free. Where do they think that "free" comes from? Do the ones doing the work just do it without pay for those? :D

For the rest of the western world health care are in a relative way free, it's what you expect to get for your tax money, I don't get mad because the kid next door has a free university education, or can have surgery without insurance. Even I has to pay for surgery, had them fix my hand and it did cost me 30$ but I can live with that.

And the taxes in US are not very low if I read the statistics right, so what do the average us citizen get for the tax mony the pay?

And this is a real question not a provocation, I sure pay very much taxes but I can demand a lot to from the government.

They are generally individuals on assistance... like the premature baby with over a million in medical care mostly at Stanford... the Mom was 15... not even old enough to buy insurance and the Grandmother 31 years old.

I have seen many time those with no insurance received outstanding medical care without regard to payment or ability to pay.

But how does it work? Is there any common health care that's are free to use? Do schoolchildren has any government coverage?

How does people pay if they don't have insurens?
If you get serious I'll with canser, no coverage do you get threatment?

Are there local variation form county to county?

It’s complicated, Agvg. (The understatement of the year.)

First no one can be denied or turned away from Emergency Medical Treatment...

Are there local variation form county to county?

All hospitals are required to see, treat and stabilize regardless of the ability to pay.

Not quite as well known are the billions of dollars of care that is done as charity or through Hospitals that are also teaching Hospitals... low cost or free often extend to drugs... one of our Docs got a cancer patient onto a no cost expensive medicine by stating the need and applying...

Most counties also have a county Hospital and some are quite good, especially in some areas.... a local county hospital is the first choice for those with gunshot wounds as they more experience than other area hospitals...

Also, some counties provide those eligible with Health Insurance and it is workable for Hospitalization... but has problems with very low reimbursement for Doctor visits.

Plus those Medicare Eligible use this and often pay for a supplement like my friends do in Austria...

As mentioned... it does get complicated.

Medical also fuels legal... if you are injured on the job, or through someone's negligence... there will be coverage or a lawsuit...
