That blower looks like a McKee Snowlander. McKee, a Canadian company made blowers for Kubota and others in the 1970;s and 80's and just painted them different colors.

Does it have open gears like these in place of a gearbox just behind the fan.

The three blade fan is a bit of a clue.

Regardless, that blower looks like one that will serve you well.

Blowers today incorporate an easily added design feature which blocks off a portion of the circular fan opening to restrain the snow as it goes up the chute.

A piece of approx 1/8" steel plate bolted on is the way to do it.
This image is of a brand new blower.

This one is the one you posted photos of.

Not sure if that's a McKee, it is kinda similar though. Here's my McKee Snolander 520:

Your 520 McKee is like the 720 I had but mine had double augers. Your 520 would have a gear box full of oil behind the fan.

The smaller 48" McKee's had the square chute not a round one.

The 48" McKee used open bevel gears which run with only snow for a lube and last forever,

I have some McKee manuals courtesy of "Eric the Oracle" , a member on this forum

Gotcha, all great information! You're correct, gearbox full of oil behind the fan on mine. I actually have an original parts/repair manual for my 520, too. I make a point to find original parts manuals for my implements if possible, makes sourcing parts much easier!

I read somewhere that the three blade 2nd stage fan wasn't the best at removing all the snow the auger feeds it. From looking at the parts diagram and the materials it's made from, if I find it to struggle it will be easy to fabricate a new blower fan for it. I'll decide after I get some use out of it! Thanks for the informative post, Dave!

I would try first adding the triangle piece near the fan as it is easy to do. Since it is on all new snowblowers I have seen it must be an improvement.

Sometimes the triangle piece is welded on which is a real pain. Three bolts will hold it secure and be easy to remove if the fan has to come off.

Getting the fan off the gear box hub is next to impossible, at least when I had to do it after blowing concrete blocks, thus bending the fan.

The 3 blade fan will do the job as long as you control the backup speed. Its performance would have to be pretty bad to justify the oxy acetylene torch work getting things hot enough to try and pull.

Pulling with a puller is hard as there is really nothing to grab with the puller arms and getting a strong enough bolt in the fan hub for the puller to push against usually resulted in a bent grade 8 and lots of cursing.

Is Hanson still in business? Does anybody have any contact info?

I saw this Toro blower on Craigslist and was wanting to talk to Hanson if possible. It looks a lot like my Acra made, Toro snow blower. They are made in the same town, So I am guessing they are the same company - One bought the other out.

Nope, Mr. Hanson Died over a decade ago and the snovac people bought his existing drawings and any patents in force.
They have not bothered to improve them either.
