My New Holland TC33D has a diesel engine. When changing the engine oil do I have to put in a specific oil for diesels or is it ok to use an regular oil that I put in my gas engine car like a Quaker State or Pennzoil? The owner's manual does not specify. It just says it should be 10w-30 oil for all year round.

Use rotella 15w40 or even 5w40. Synthetic is about $20 a gal at homedepot.

At a minimum I would think that you should be using an oil with a CJ-4 rating;
CJ-4 replaced the following ratings and it has been replaced its self by the CK-4 rated oils.
CJ-4 oils exceed the performance criteria of API CI-4 with CI-4 PLUS, CI-4, CH-4, CG-4 and CF-4 and can effectively lubricate engines calling for those API Service Categories.

Yes, and the owner's manual should specify a type that starts with C as LouNY posted.

As mentioned, you need a high detergent oil with a diesel rating (CJ I think is the latest)
Rotella T6 oil will work for gasoline and diesel engines. I use the 5W-40 Rotella T6 in everything, Evinrude 4cycle boat engine, Honda Goldwing motorcycle, cars, truck, motorhome and of course my tractors.

The 5W-40 is good for all season where I live, you may need a 0W-xx for your seasonal weather to make for easier starting in the winter. Consult the charts in your OEM manual for temperatures high and low to determine the correct oil.

Large investment piece of machinery designed to outlive you. Sure, just throw car oil in. Heck just throw used car oil in, I'm sure it'll be fine:confused:

Is this a money issue or something else that makes you want to use something else?

When I got my first diesel tractor back before the Internet, I didn't know there was different oil for diesels. :eek:

Your manual should give you the "C" rating along with the viscosity.

No you should not use any oil that isn't formulated for diesel engines, if you care for the life of your engine.
