Small Engine Battery CCA Requirements

I need a battery for my JD LX279 riding lawnmower, the factory battery is 500 CCA, really???

I have a 160HP Yamaha that uses a 300CCA battery, a Kawasaki 24HP Cub Zero Turn that uses a 230CCA "cheap" mower battery, and for some reason JD says I need a $150 full size battery for a 17HP Kawasaki engine. As long as I can hook it up I am not concerned with a factory fit it is not like I am doing high speed maneuvers.

Any thoughts on the matter? I'm bored the wife is watching NCIS

A standard 300 CCA lawn mower battery is more than sufficient. I’m not a fan of the 230 CCA bargain lawn mower batteries, but one of them would do it as well.

In the winter, around here, if I had a 300 CCA battery in my M6040, it had better start the first time. It always has, but I don't know if there would be much left if I had to go for a second or third start attempt. And I really don't want to find out. I have a Group 31, Odyssey AGM, with 1150 CCA, Deltron battery tender and never worry about starting.

If I could get an adequate battery for $9.62 - I'd be going that way also. Very little to loose there.

TSC just cancelled my order, no reason. I assume they had a system error and didn't want to sell a $45 for $10.

The original battery in these lasts a good long time. You can match it at any auto parts store or convert the terminals and do a lawn and garden battery. As Rick noted, 300 CCA is a good size to shoot for. Maintenance free if you can.

I don't have to replace batteries that often in any of my machines. But when I do I always go for a battery with at least the same amount of CCAs or higher than the original that will fit in the battery compartment and make the connections without any alterations.

I want something long lasting and most of all dependable.

That’s usually good advise, I’d give it AND follow it. But we are talking about a frigging 17 hp Kawi. There’s millions of engines of this size being started with 230-300 CCA batteries.

Your advise notwithstanding I think a $150 500 CCA battery for this application is overkill.
