Need a pump for deisel fuel

California,

The advantage of a bigger tank is that I treat my fuel with three additives. I can go months before I use it all up. It is easier to add the additives once, than measure out what I need into 3-4 jugs which is what I have been doing. I also wanted something my neighbor could use when I am away, as he runs out of fuel and the closest station is 10 miles away. BTW, my neighbor has a larger tractor than I do, and he lets me borrow it for the jobs the 855 cannot handle....so letting him have some fuel in an emergency is a small price to pay.

But the cost of doing this even with the "free" storage tank was getting a bit high as I needed to buy a trailer, and now you brought up another issue....what if the gas station starts giving me a hassle? The only diesel supplier in the area will not deliver less than 150 gallons, and that is a two year supply for me, so I am not eager to do that.

I am going to try out the pump you suggested. It seems like a good compromise. I too spill fuel trying to fill tanks with jugs and the new generation of jugs are even worse. Having no nozzle at all to deal with will be a blessing!

Thanks again!

Here's what I built, and used, before going back to 5 gallon jugs and the little 'kerosene heater' type battery pump.

This turned out to be not as convenient as I hoped.

Pros:
* Easy to roll next to the tractors and easy to pump. 15 revolutions per gallon. No electricity needed.
* Inexpensive. $29 at Harbor Freight + $5 for the tank. (Had carwash detergent).
* A very valuable feature: crank forward to pump, backward to suck. Several times I 'stole' a few gallons of fuel out of the larger tractor that is seldom run, to put in the little tractor and run a few more days without going to town for fuel.

Cons:
* The main reason I went back to Blitz jugs: the only local gas station with farm (untaxed) diesel recognized me and would no longer sell fuel into a non-DOT container. He said he faced significant fines if he did. His counter looked right out toward the pumps.
* I had to hitch up my trailer to make a fuel run. Blitz jugs fit in my Subaru but this was too tall.
* The plastic at the bung threads softened and wouldn't hold the pump upright after a couple of years.

I have that setup with a 55 gallon blue barrel.

No issue with the first two 'cons' as I simply go down the road to a farmer neighbor that gets the red stuff delivered to their 500 gallon tank. The third 'con' I can see becoming an issue someday.

Consider talking to that neighbor about having a tank placed at his location for bulk deliveries, then get what you need from there. Share the costs.

I bought this one in 3/16, 11V Electric Diesel Oil Fuel Transfer Pump w/ Meter +13' Hose & Nozzle New | eBay It's hooked up to 30 gal barrel, currently on my 7th barrel. 2 months ago had to replace the plastic hose that goes in barrel, the diesel fuel made it so brittle that it kept breaking, that when I found out that 1" diesel fuel hose is expensive. The pump so far is working good, I'm all done with the 5 gal bucket brigade.

Oldpath05, how do you get your 30 gal drum filled?

Take the barrel up to store in pickup truck where they sell ORF, place on pallet, ratchet strap down, bring back and unload with tractor forks.

So I sold it and went to the little battery pump. I'm getting too old to pour from a 5 gallon jug into the filler on top of the cowl without spilling!

My current fuel tank is in old reefer tank so I suppose that’s Dot approved. I use to fill up a barrel and they never said anything. They did give my buddy a hassle about trying to buy and haul 400 gallons without having a CDL. The 400 gallons was in an approved container but apparently you’re supposed to have a cdl to haul over 100 gallons.

HF has a 12v pump with nozzle under $150.
Diesel Transfer Pump - Save on this 12 Volt Transfer Pump
I get my fuel delivered to 275 gal. tanks at home. I have 3 of them, 2 for home heating and 1 for the tractor. I use a Roughneck 12v pump from Northern tool for that tank. I switched away from 5 gallon jugs several years ago when my tractor tanks were 12 gal. and higher and took too long to fill and too many trips to the truck stop to refill them.

Just a general note -
It seems that for our small tractors fuel usage is relatively minor. I'll burn about 60 to 70 gallons driving my F350 and trailer between DC and Northeast Mississippi in a 1 day trip and my tank holds 38 gallons. I'll burn maybe 5 gallons of diesel in a weekend with my M4700 tractor and my tank holds 17 gallons. My B7610 a LOT less.
So in a long day with my truck I need to fill a couple times, my tractors often go months between refills.

For decades for filling my equipment I had been using a siphon hose and a 5 gallon jerry can. Sometimes I pour with a spout. However I've noticed that over the last 10 years my ability to lift a full 5 gallon can onto the top of my tractor has become less. And this seems to be a major complaint against gravity filling by many people.
Getting the container high enough to pour/drain.

To get around that I purchased a 14 gallon Duromax Fuel caddy (wheeled), with hose and handle.
I can put the caddie in the FEL and lift it to drain fuel. (It is a good lift (~120lbs) to put it in the back of my truck, but I drag it up a ramp of 2 2x6's.)

A little off topic but at one time, my accountant told me to save my receipts for road diesel that I buy for off-road use. He said we could claim a tax credit for the fuel taxes. So if road diesel is handier to get than off-road... This was 30 years ago so you should probably confirm this.
