Think about it from his perspective. It's a $179 saw that's hardly used and in good running condition for $110. That model saw got/gets consistently good reviews. If he's happy and you're happy, that's all that counts.

Agree. Win-win.

Plus he bought it from someone who knows how to fix saws properly and wouldn't let a piece of junk out of his shop.

Honestly, he's also from about 10 minutes away. I told him that if he had any problems to bring it back and I'll tweak the tune on it or try to help with any complaints.

Good deal.

I had a good friend buy a saw from me. Few months later says it wont pull though without chain turning. I said bring it back have idea what it is.
Was right. Clutch spring broke. I just pulled a clutch from a runner I had being I had to order spring.

Then he said it sometimes would get stuck on rewinding cause he pulled to max. I pulled a complete recoil on on another saw to swap.

He hasnt been back with it in at least a year.

IMO take care of those that take care of your pocket.

Picked up a Stihl ms250 for $20 that was locked up. Replaced the bad crank bearings and she fired up this afternoon on the third crank. Cuts good will give to my dad or son.

Think my 5 year old XP550 is on it's way out, for the past 2 months the rpm's have been going down, now the past few days it would only start then stall, changing fuel filter and air filter cleaning made no difference. So now contemplating a new saw, thinking of going out on a limb with Echo CS-501P, but have the jitters Chainsaws, Professional-Grade Chain Saws, Top Handle Chain Saws | ECHO USA Anyone here have Echo saw? Was thinking of Jonsered of similar size but it appears they went with a ONE nut bar nut, not liking that at all.

I have an echo CS 352. I like it- it's light and starts super easy, even easier than I'd expect a 34cc saw to start.

The air filter is not as good as the Stihl filters in their M-tronic saws. It lets some fine material into the carb. I stuffed some oiled foam filter material in the air box to try to trap some before it gets to the filter. The gas and oil filler holes are small so its easier to overflow. The saw came with the carb adjusters set as rich as the limiters allow and it was still a little lean. I removed the limiters, trimmed the tabs and put them back, then adjusted to spec using a tach. I also removed the catalytic converter but left the muffler stock otherwise because it's quiet.

If it was me I'd try to figure out what's wrong with the 550. Many problems like that are fixable. It might just be a carb that needs cleaning out. Is it unusually easy to pull over? The rings may just be worn so much that it doesn't have enough compression.

I agree, I would give it an air filter replacement and a carb tune. I bet it's fine aside from needing the carb tweaked in.

Don't give up yet. That is a fine saw, and fixable.

Folks often neglect the muffler and spark-arrestor. Could be clogged, esp if not using 50:1 synth mix. When the muffler is off, check out the piston and cyl for scoring.

("Is it unusually easy to pull over?") The 550 pulls over like it always did, it's just that it started first with loosing rpm's, now it just starts and fast idles for a few seconds then stalls, I think there's something wrong with that expensive maintenance free auto tune. Very few saw shops near by now, I might call where I bought it this Sat. and see if he's still in business, since Apil 2013 this saw has always been a PITA. One plus about the Echo dealer, their near by and open til 5 on Sat.
