Help me decide - Massey vs Kubota - 40-50hp

Odds are resale on an MX series tractor will recoup you a higher percentage of your purchase price than a relatively unknown L4707.

MX has larger front wheels/tires, more robust front axle and transmission case. I believe the components comprising the MX Three Point Hitch are heavier than same components on L4707 but I am not quite sure.


Homeowner's Insurance is usually liability only for tractors. Repairs on you.

KTAC covers repairs, less $250 deductible.

Kubota M whatever, hands down. Kubota is Japanese (number one in my books) and a solid company. For the time being anyway, they design, and make their tractors and engines. That may not matter to some people, but it means something to me.

Check resale values to see what people think of them and the bottom line. The market will tell you what people think of each of them by valuation. Does the manufacturer stand by their product and care if you're happy or not?

I have an MX5100, which is about the same as an MX4800, and it is probably the best tractor I have ever owned. Power, weight, feel...it's all there and when you add a loader it looks like it belongs. I don't know the exact model of MF but am familiar with the older ones that were beautifully built. But does that follow through to the current models? Resale prices will tell.

I know about both kubotas so I'm mainly looking for opinions on the Massey. I think the Massey might be a nice compromise between the high $$$ Kubota and something like a Mahindra, LS etc.

I think you're discounting Mahindra too much. I looked at the Massey's when I was shopping for a tractor and though the Massey was nice, it was overpriced for what you get in comparison to the Mahindra. Also, both the Kubota and the Massey have DPF which has been problematic for a lot of people. Mahindra doesn't use DPF to meet tier 4 requirements. Mahindra also beats Kubota and Massey and many others on warranty with a 2 year full warranty on everything and a 7 year powertrain warranty included.

I think I've convinced myself to get the hydro tractor regardless of what model I get. I'm also getting the loader and bucket, R4 tires and a remote out back. That's it.

The MX4800 vs L4701 comparison is really a moot point. The best dealer quote I have (15% below MSRP before taxes) proves there is only a $6.00 difference between monthly payments. Unless the added weight of the MX4800 is a problem, I see no real reason to save the $500.00 difference and buy the L4701. Plus, the 1065 Loader on the MX has a higher capacity.

So now I'm trying to decide if I need the MX4800 or if the L3901 will do. This is a terribly hard decision as there is a $6700.00 difference between the two ($80.00 per month). Is there anything, other than lifting more, that the MX4800 will do that the L3901 will not do? The MX4800 is bigger... The MX4800 is heavier... Is the MX4800 $6700.00 better?

hmmmmmmm... I'm so indecisive with this stuff!!!!

Yeah.. I would really hate to complicate things any more at this point. Some of the fit and finish I have seen on the Mahindra units has been suspect. Runs in the paint and just an overall cheaper feeling compared to other brands on the same HP and features. Believe me, I'm no tractor snob, but if I'm handing out 25-30K over 6 years Im going to want the nicest tractor, with the least issues, and the best fit/finish of all available brands.

It seems that Mahindra likes to brag up their specs, but looking at the other parts of their tractors, i think they may have cut corners in other areas. Maybe I should go give them another look.

Other than specs on paper, can anyone make a case for the Mahindra over the Kubota offering in the 45-50hp range?

Weight is a good thing, but you should buy what you can afford, regardless. If you can afford the extra $80 it's a no brainer for me. If you are stretching already, buy something cheaper. 84 months is an incredibly long time to finance something.

I own one probably very close to what you're looking for, the 2655 HST. Been great and I know of a lot of other very satisfied owners as well which is part of the reason why I went with Mahindra. Kubota was actually #3 on my list. #2 was Kioti. Both Kioti and Mahindra offered a lot more tractor for the money than Kubota.

I can afford either but the MX is at the top of what I "want" to spend on a tractor (Maybe even about 20-30 dollars more than I want to spend).

I too don't like long term financing, but with close to 0% interest rates and not having 26K laying around, sometimes it makes sense..

Unless you're lifting heavy logs with the loader the L3901 or 3301 will do what you need. You may need to make a few more passes or a couple more trips with the bucket but it'll do the same things an MX will do, just in slightly smaller bites. If you spend less on the tractor that'll leave more for implements, which are what gets the work done. (even with the heavy logs in the loader you can cut them shorter or cut them into rounds when they're too much for the loader. I have to do that with some logs. WIth less loader capacity you just do it for more logs or use another way to move them).

Take your time shopping to get what you want.

I originally was going to get a B3350 to replace my B7100. As I did more research I realized it'd be too small. I test drove an L3301 but didn't like how bare bones it is. Especially the PTO as I planned to run a PTO chipper a lot. The Branson 3725H I ended up with cost less, has more features including an independent PTO that I can operate from the ground, and weighs a lot more. The weight's a good thing most of the time. As much as I use it I could have justified an L60 but the only thing I'm really missing is a few more hp to chip material close to my chipper's 8" capacity faster. I didn't think I'd be chipping stuff that large. I can manage with the chipper feed turned way down.

Nothing wrong with Kubotas but there are other makes that can be better deals. Of course you want to have a good dealership that's close enough and that'll probably knock some makes out of the running. And with some you'll need to line up the financing on your own.
