I have an extra set of rear tires and wheels.
I was thinking about making my tractor a dually.
What would it take?
What would be the pros and cons.

My thoughts...
Pros more traction.
Cons have to take them off to load the tractor on a trailer.

Probably a (tubular) adapter that bolts on to original axle flanges on outside of existing wheel (with longer studs/lug bolts) and accepts second set of wheels... Extra width will put extra strain on axles and bearing though...

Something similar to this pic but designed not as spacer bit as extension to accept second wheel... Also consider wheel design, inside wheel may "crush" (flatten) and cause extension to flop around, inside wheel may need to be reinforced..

Thank you. That is the idea I was going with for now.
I do not know what options I have other than this and some hook thing.
I was thinking this spacer/adapter would be better. I was thinking, I did not want the rubber of the two tires to touch each other. Keeping them aired up properly is a problem for me, at least until I get new tires.

This would be on my IH584. I think the axle will handle any extra strain.
Your thoughts on the 584?

What/why are you thinking of reinforcing the steel wheels. Are tractors with duel wheels equipped with different wheels than tractors with single wheels?

I have no knowledge or experience with duel wheels on a tractor. I am just thinking that since I have them, why not try and learn? The sites on line that make these adapters seem kind of pricey, but I though I might find some at tractor swap meets.

Also I am hoping I can get some input here from farmers who have experience with them.

older tractors had a special dual rim that fit on the edge of tractor rim. then you had Locks that clamped them together. a PIA to put on and a PIA to take off. later models made a hub for the axle which made it a little easier . Unless you are doing some heavy cultivating or disking i would think you are just spinning your wheels ..

Cultivating is the main reason I have considered doing this.
Using a 6' double row tine cultivator, going deep can stop me in my tracks. So I raise and lower the 3pt a lot or just go shallow.

It will not help with stopping you in your tracks that is a HP issue . If your spinning down It will help some but it likely still going to be a HP issue the extra traction will lift the front. you will need several hundred pounds of weights .

Stops my forward motion. Tires just spin and dig into the ground.

The loader adds a lot of weight to the front end. I have twice hooked a big root with my subsoiler that stopped the forward movement, caused the rear tires to dig in and lifted the front end off the ground with the loader. The front tires were over 6' in the air.
Scared me pretty good.
I thought it was going to flip over. It was trying to. The tires started bouncing, I was bouncing in my seat. It took me longer than I would have like for my feet to find the clutch and brake.

My M6040 owners manual says in NO UNCERTAIN TERMS - no dualies either front or rear.

Does your axle shaft stick out ?? the stock photos I find does not show one that does . If they do n ot you would have to have the rim spacer
