That first guy was asking for it. Never put your hands on the end of the piece to be split.

The "safety police" would have a field day with that unit. First guy needs more practice keeping his hand off the chunk being split. However - you would, most likely, only make a mistake once. Certainly works good though.

Put the compression spring above the lever (or use a tension spring below it).

It looks like it works good but it looks like nice straight grain wood. I didnt watch all the video though.
