My knowledge is limited, but let me share what I have experienced. I have seen Ford V10 engines running large irrigation pumps. I believe they maintain about 3k rpm in doing so. In my younger years, I worked on pile driving equipment. The power packs driving the vibratory hammers were diesel, no gas engines available. The bigger the hammer, the bigger the engine. We had a V32 hammer powered by a 16V-71 Detroit Diesel equipped with 2 blowers and 2 turbos. A beast of a unit. I feel they both have their place, however, for a consistent, continuous load, I do not see how the efficiency and power of a diesel engine can be topped.
