The F-104 Starfighter was a very small wing.... pilot killer!

F-104 AKA the Widow maker.

F104's tiny "highly loaded" wing (per surface area) meant that landing gear was tucked into the fuselage in flight. This narrow gear and instability at low speed made it a bear to land, esp in crosswinds. WWII Me109 had similarly narrow main wheel spacing and was also tricky to land under varying conditions.

F100 was just an unstable handful at low speed. That it didn't kill as many pilots is mostly because unlike the other two familiar 'widowmakers' its service life was cut very short. Its inflight performance raised the bar and beget a bunch of other 100-series planes. The speedy F107 was an F100-based never-adopted experimental that 'looked' like you wouldn't want to eject from it.

Yeah we learned a bunch the hard way with those tiny wings. Computer stability control is now the ticket.

I'm only in my 50's, but I also didn't see the F104 Starfighter. Remember my father complaining about that plane. Growing up as a kid on a SAC base was the coolest when you could watch the airfield and were in cub scouts.

Same here don't remember seeing Lockheed f-104 Starfighter


Since they included the SR-71

maybe the YF-12A would be more like a fighter since it was an Interceptor

Guy I worked with once, was a crew chief for Mr. Yeager. He oozed the right stuff all over the place. Amazing people, amazing time.

The book was pretty awesome too.
