New to me drill press repairs

I'm familiar with lock-n-stitch, they recently completed a 3year project at my work so I got to talk to their reps quite a bit. Good system but I definitely got the feeling they would bash any other system of cast repair.
I think they are way too successful to not heed their advice though!.. any problems with their work?. if not, then they must have done it the right way!!..

I've got some crap..... I mean scrap you can have

Interested in the thread because I have never had luck doing anything with cast. However, General Machine is between me and you :D

Why do you suggest Ni99? this is a decent size casting and will need some cleanup/machine work possibly. Spray powder isnt really the right process for this repair, it has structure, not just closing up an exhaust manifold or head crack.

I think I'll be going with the Ni55 for this one.

99 is much more machinable than 55 although 55 can be machined to a point with carbide cutters. Tensile is a non issue with this so you could nearly fix it with anything.

You're right, I got the ni99 and ni55 mixed up in my head on machinability. I'm hoping it wont need any work, the only thing that might is if it burns through on the thinner section into the area where the gear rack goes but I'm not thinking it will.

It's true that almost any repair should work, I'm still not a fan of spray metal outside of things like shaft buildup and crack repair heads/blocks etc. I just want to make sure it's still a strong repair as that table is heavy!

I'm only into this thing for $50 so even if I have to fab the peice from scratch I should be ahead, the guy I talked to that use to run it said it had been cracked for a while and they just made a screw jack to help support the table (which was included with the press).

Once I start grooving out the crack I'll get a better feel for the material, if I dont like how it looks I may go back to just brazing it. The Taiwanese know how to make some nice castings, however most of my experience has been newer stuff, this has a date code of 1988 so I'm not sure how it'll compare to the newer stuff.

To give a reference on size for the piece, the column is 6in dia.

You have a nice machine there. I wish I had it. Fun to fix and fun to use. Let us know how it turns out. Good luck.

I’m glad you referenced the 6” column. Looking again at your pics it gives much better perspective and appreciation for its size.

Good luck with the repair. You will have a beautiful machine.

Thanks, it is a beast, when I saw it in CL there wasnt many pictures or references to size and I couldn't find any more info online. When I went to look at it I was a bit surprised at its size and happy to see power feed.

Was looking at adding power feed to my 20" Clausing dp, to get a used factory setup would have cost me more then I paid for it!

Hopefully I can get caught up on a few projects soon, been sick for the past couple weeks so not as productive as I normally am.

So you guys are all talking about nickel rod. I don't have any and have never welded with the stuff. Years ago I found some ArcTec 223. It's worked for everything cast that I've needed to weld. I'm not criticizing your choices as I have no knowledge on then. I'm just throwing out another option.

Home - Arctec Alloys

I just googled Arctec. I'd be surprised if anybody heard of it. Arctec is a Canadian company out of Calgary.

Did you get it worked out yet?

Nope, got the flu last week so I'm behind on pretty much all projects, this one isnt really a priority but hopefully I can get to it soon once I get caught up on a few things. I did get the piece off, just need to get it cleaned up and prepped.
