Things A ot Of People Say That Don't Make Much Sense.

I actually feel uncomfortable when I get ' thank you for your service ' all the time.
Feels like they do it because it is the new 'in thing ' or 'pc'
I'm retired, I don't advertise I'm ex military aside from a tatoo on my arm that sometimes shows, but is covered with a short sleeved shirt, i still wear my dog tags, and do have a retired army decal on the rear window of my truck.
Sometimes when I get it out of the blue I get a little shocked and wonder how they know. Little tells. But you can usually read the ones that actually mean it actually respect, and the ones who say it out of habit.

That is beginning to creep into the Aussie vernacular and, I too, feel somewhat uncomfortable with it on occasion. There's a difference between it being said with honesty or because it's the 'new thing' to say.

Little wonder, there are so many imposters around. A few bucks spent at the surplus store and you get all kinds of respect.

Hey - it goes beyond that. A lot of people don't make sense whenever they open their mouth.

Don't forget, there are some of us who, when we recognize your unselfish service, actually choke up and say the best thing we know how to say. It may be clumsy, and it may be a bit halting, but from me, it is heartfelt and sincere. I don't know how to do it better.

What gets me is the way checkers, at cash registers are obviously made to greet me like a long lost friend. Then they don't seem to recognize me five minutes later.

You still have checkout clerks at your grocery store?

Our large stores have self checkouts. Our local chain still has clerks. We know most of them, so yes, they ask how we are and we say pretty good, how are you today? They always ask "Did you find everything OK?" I always say yes. However, a couple weeks ago, I had to say "No." They are always out of diet caffeine free dr. pepper on the shelf for my wife. It happens almost every time we go there. So this time, I went to the office and asked them to see if they had anymore in the back. They did. But after the clerk asked me that, I thought about it and said No. That's the first time in 58 years of going there that I really thought about it.

Then I asked what she was going to do with the information. She kinda got a silly look on her face and shrugged her shoulders. She said no one ever said No before.

funny, try saying no when they ask if you found everything you wanted, they look dazed at it

True story. I have a hard time recognizing people. I was looking over a security job in a house. The husband had to go away and I continued my inspection. Afterwards I went to the local grocery store to do my shopping. I bumped into a guy that obviously knew me, but I couldn't place him. It was the husband. I didn't get that job.

Thanks Mate... and it is appreciated. I'll take what you've said 'on board'.

Honestly, I don't get the whole "Thank you for your service" thing either. I mean how did this get to be such a big thing? Now granted, when I joined, they were still spitting on vets in the street, calling you "baby killers" (actually had a guy say that to me in an airport once when I was traveling in uniform), and treating you like dog doo, so I guess this is better. Lol.

But I've been out for almost 30 years now. I don't advertise, don't march in veteran parades, don't wear anything to tip anyone off, don't have any tattoos. Most of the time I don't even think about it. I'm not ashamed of my service or anything, but when I joined almost 40 years ago, it wasn't so that 40 years later, standing in some checkout line, some kid the same age as the pants I'm wearing, can say "Thank you for your service".

I don't get it. I guess I just wrongly assume that most able body guys I see walking around have served, and none of us are making a big deal of it?

It's fine with me if you have, and it's also fine with me if you haven't served. I don't look down on anyone that hasn't. It was their choice.

What kind of person you are is more important that if you served or not. I knew guys that served that I would not turn my back on, or trust in any way. I also knew guys that never served that I would trust with my life.

So I'm just rambling I guess.
