This is the wheel drive motor on a zero turn mower ( my 428D Grasshopper). There’s a hub that presses on that spindle. I’ll check the other side for a snap ring but I think I’d have noticed a grove cut last time I had it apart.

Look to the far right at PN# 3, I'm pretty sure that's the missing C-clip.

I found the picture on Google, wasn't able to pull up the parts list, but I bet its available....nice heavy duty mower! 428d_2003_pump.gif

Try doing a search for the mower shop. They have parts diagrams listed for the 428D. I did a quick look at did not see any snap ring. Looks that is considered a dust seal and the main seals are O-rings. I believe I looked at the 2004

There doesn’t appear to be a snap ring based on that parts diagram. The possibility exists that the 3rd party seal isn’t the right one but I’d guess the more likely scenario is the o-ring is leaking behind the seal and oil pressure is pushing it out.

I don't see a lock ring of any kind think you might be right about an o-ring. Something has to pushing seal out hope you can figure it out.

It doesn’t leak that bad to the tune of maybe 4 gallons last season but it’s enough to make a mess and create a safety hazard on my steel deck trailer. I’d like it to be leak free. That might be a tall order for a tired 2200 hour machine.

Yeah, looking back I was looking at the pump, not the motor, it still looks like there should be a snap ring, but maybe it is just a friction fit.

I don't see a snap ring just the seal then the nut for the hub so try the lock tire or worst case use a punch and go around where the seal fits in and stake it after you push seal back in. I would try seal lock first, I had same problem on a steering pump on an old JD 400
