Rural Southern Guys And Snakes.

I think a solid vinyl fence, going to the ground would keep them out, I don't think anything could climb that!. In Florida, there are Alligators too.. I saw an idiot feeding one about a block from My house there!.. they like to hang out in the drainage canals..

I have 50 acres in rural Al. I have only seen one snake on my property, and it was a rat snake.
The best way I have found to keep snakes away is to try your best to eliminate the things they eat. If there is no food, the snakes won't hang around.

The enemy of snakes are hawks, and I'm blessed to have many in my area. When I'm on the tractor bush hogging the field. The hawks fly in the surrounding trees, watching for what may come out of the high grass. When they see the field rats,or snakes come out, they fly down and grab them

I’ve seen more snakes in my neighborhood on the street about dusk than I’ve ever seen at my farm or rural properties.

And until we stop feeding them, they will only get worse.

All this talk about snakes,, Hmmmmmmmm,,,,,,,
What about spiders and ,,,,,,,, ANTS!!

My first run in with a fire ant was in FLA,,

My best friend almost lost a daughter to a spider bite,,
she was in the hospital a week!!

I would bet there are more serious insect/spider bites,, than snake bites,,,

This is a great thread...
When I moved into my current house in 1985 my grandmother had let the basement get cluttered...
Three dump truck loads of junk was removed...
Boy was I shocked when a black rat snake was caught slithering on top of the furnace ductwork under the floor of the house...
Around here we have copper heads and a few rattlers...
On the farm here I've only seen black rat snakes and king snakes...
We always let them go...
Good advise on keeping everything mowed and as clean as possible...
Some folks around here use moth balls too...

The only snakes I've seen here since 1994 have been Garter snakes and their nastier cousin Copper Belly Water snakes. They like to get into my dug well in summer. The cats keep the ones in the basement at bay. The cats will kill them, I don't know if they eat them though.
Garters and CBW snakes are harmless unless you are a very small mammal like a mouse.

We have lived in our home about 27 years and have only seen one rattler on our property. That was about a year ago. WE have had multiple cats over the years who have kept snakes at bay. They cornered a coral on the back porch once and killed it.

The snakes on the streets have been taking advantage of the warm pavement as the sun goes down, I think.

Fire ants and spiders are also a concern no doubt. My sister has a guy that comes every month to spray or whatever he does, she does this because a brown recluse bit her and her hand took a beating. Skin grafting, the whole nine yards. I hate spiders..

Don't overlook fleas, they are responsible for more deaths than snakes, not to mention sickness that doesn't result in death, even if they don't make you sick or kill you, there's the discomfort.:hissyfit::duh::stirthepot:
