Western Washington snow storm: first plowing in 6 years

Mark, you usually get the big sow dumps and we get nothing or a trace. Back in the 80s, forget the exact year, was the last time I saw this much snow around Puget Sound. That year it was very cold and it lasted awhile. Rain is coming later in the week with freezing nights. Driving is no fun when fighting 12" of slushing snow that freezes overnight.

Yeah, starting to melt now and we have some sun! It's gonna be a real mess and dangerous in tomorrow morning I figure.

Last night, I spent 3 hours clearing the communal drive way and my neighbor's driveway. Snow was too heavy and deep to push (about 10-12" of new snow), especially since the snow was piled up on the berms from previous plowing. Was raining by the time I was done; drenched and frozen. Had to run a herringbone pattern to clear the road... and I took the opportunity of doing that to plow ditch-to-ditch, thinking that it would make the next day's plow easier.

And it didn't. Had about 5" of slush this morning, painful to plow because the gravel road beneath is turning to mud.

I feel your pain......I hate having to plow in a herringbone and inevitably take too much of a chunk and then stall out....and even as loud as our machines are my neighbors can still hear me swearing over the sound of the engine or rather the lack of sound from the stalled engine....lol......wet heavy snow I try to limit to 6-8" at a time.....our machines just don't have the weight to handle more then that comfortably.......Jack

My only casualty from this snow. There is a diesel generator, cement mixer, and quite a few PT attachments inside...

here in north idaho we have 30+ inches on ground as measured this afternoon. I had to take the walk behind blower into town to clear the driveway of my rental house and i went to home depot to get a few more shear pins for it. I was talking to special order desk and asked how many snow blowers they had left.... NONE. Thay had 40 in stock 2 days ago, and were afraid they wernt going to sell them. What a difference a few days make. snow 3.jpg

Did my first plowing ever! Too lazy and wimpy to put my back blade on my BX so I got a taste of trying to move 12 to 18in of snow that starting melting off of an asphalt drive. Wow, that stuff piles up fast! Hope I didn't do damage to the paving (new this year!) as I have a Piranha Tooth Bar on my bucket.. Didn't finish the job... we are still snowed in but I made a dent. I first tackled my neighbor's drive... it was shelters and wasn't as deep as other parts of the 1000ft of area to clear. I now have an appreciation for snow blowers and front blades appropriately outfitted and actuated.

Was a beautiful day at 34degF and some much welcomed sun! I got in deeper and on steeper grade... started getting difficult to maintain control. More work tomorrow!

Tim, sorry to see the shed go down. I hope it won稚 be too hard to put it back up. I love my PT for doing oddball things like that. I can pull stuf up or down, and have a temporary anchor while I get things where I want. It is like having a hired hulk to do the heavy stuff for me.

We only got a couple of inches, but we had four crashes on our road before seven am. People go bonkers here to see snow, and nobody knows how to drive in snow, which is a bad combination...

All the best,

Peter
