Caltrans says snow too deep on Highway 80 to run plows and more on the way....

Drought declared officially over... maybe we need regular doses of Western WA weather in California?

The last few days sure seemed like Western WA except for the umbrellas.

Seldom see many Umbrellas in Olympia... but a few drops of rain in the Bay Area and out come the Umbrellas...

That's a long handled device that you can lean on while talking to people, they even have a small steel step for a foot rest.

A shovel used to be used exactly that way on all road crews. Five guys leaning on shovels, one guy looking at the plans and one guy on the backhoe idling while waiting.

Now it is eight people looking at their phones, three people in their trucks, two on their iPads and one guy in an excavator idling while waiting.

No need for a shovel these days. Progress :confused3:

I was just in Portland this week, had a colleague down from Seattle as well. She didnt say much about the snow. All everyone talked about in Portland was how the 2nd Snowpocalypse the weather person predicted never happened. Portland got a dusting in the city, turned to inches and inches of rain, flooding. An hour east in The Gorge they got hammered with snow. It shut down I-84 for DAYS. We were supposed to go to The Dalles, but were never able to make it due to the highway being closed down.

See, that's why I like living in Indiana. The very few times that they close a highway, there's always another road open just a mile over. Almost universally, one road every mile, north/south and east/west. 640 acre squares with a road on all 4 sides. Mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile after mile

I just read that Mammoth Mountain in CA has received 163 inches of snow. This month! Apparently the resort is open, but skiers cannot get there because the road crews can't keep up with plowing the snow.

That would be nice, it is not that way out here at all. There are only 4 highways in WA from the east to west across the mountains, one of them closes every year and another closes at times. Between Seattle and Portland OR there is only ONE highway. There are side roads but they almost always travel back to the main highway. I do not know why (other than geography) but around here they never grasped the concept in minor arterial. EVERYTHING in an area goes to one road it seems. So one accident fouls up traffic like you would not believe.
