How do you do a speed test?

Just type in google, "Internet speed test" should be able to run from result page.

Thanks. Going to do right now, thanks again.

Maybe this was asked in this thread, if it was, I missed it. Is it realistic that 5G will replace a hard line to homes?

I have the best of both worlds. As I am in a rural area we will not be provided with cable and they are not replacing old copper lines.
I use both satellite and 4g broadband with 5g now coming on line.
I do not get unlimited data. I get 36 Gb with broadband and the same with satellite but if I want to sit up all night my satellite quota is doubled.
Speeds are great and my wife mainly uses the skymesh satellite while I use the broadband.
We havent run out of data yet but we only watch youtube and a bit of Netflix at times.
The broadband includes unlimited phone / text use as well.
Both services are about $45 per month, $90 total.
We only watch free to air when we feel like it. Not interested in pay TV at all. I could never watch enough to justify spending any money on it.
Seems like we have it a lot better than some of you guys.

What are they doing because of cord cutting?

Who cares! I don’t miss the cable bill and when I built this house I didn’t even let the crooks run a line to me. Kicked them off the property with a smile on my face!
Used the satellite company for a few years till they raised thier rates for the 3rd time then told them to shove it!

If more people would understand the difference between a want and a need and be willing to do without the wants for a little while they wouldn’t be able to overcharge us for thier crappy service to begin with.

^^ I really wish more people would kick the TV habit entirely. I don't miss it at all. And I was amazed at how much my electric bill dropped when I turned the TV, Satellite box, home theater and associated equipment off.

Realistic? Yes. But I think there are some gotchas with 5G from what I have read. 5G is fast but there will antenna spread all over the place since the signal does not travel far unlike the current cell service. it appears the plan is to put the 5G antenna on power and light poles. So what happens when a tree falls and takes out power? Since the 5G antennas are all over the place is it even possible money wise to have battery backups on each antenna? I would think not and even if so, how long will the battery last? Could a simple branch fall of a tree and take out a single antenna which then takes out the network from that point onward? Where are the 5G antennas going to be erected when utilities are underground and there are no light poles?

I really wonder how robust the 5G networks will be in rural settings.

We have lost power for days and days but we still had cell service. When Florence was about to hit us, I bought a small solar panel to charge USB devices. It works much better than I thought it would and it will charge our cell phones in a few hours. We might not have house power but we still have phone and voice communication because of the cell network. Will we still have that level of service with 5G?

Later,
Dan

Do you have a smart phone? No one "needs" one of them either but a lot of people seem to think they do. An expensive gadget that's obsolete in just a few years, with rather pricey monthly service charges. And of course every member of the family "needs" one...adds up.
And I haven't seen that the cell providers are any easier to deal with than cable providers are.

Why does it matter to you if others may enjoy tv? It's their life. I'm sure you enjoy time-consuming activities that others don't share.

I really wonder how robust the 5G networks will be in rural settings.

Not just robustness, but would there be a sufficient ROI on a 5G network in thinly populated areas? As it is in rural areas cell towers are concentrated along major highways, it's just that current cells are large enough to reach a fair distance. Smaller cells, maybe not. I'm sure the pole-top antennas are much cheaper than the current ones, but a lot of contracts will need to be negotiated to place them.

What kind of range do 5G signals have compared to what's currently in use?
