Do you even need 200 mbps much less 400 service? I really doubt it. One of my jobs is in, as they say now a days, IT. My hardwired access is 100 MBps which is 800 mbps. There is faster wireless but it bogs down as usage goes up in the day so that the hardwired connection, even though it is slower, is faster. :D The only time I NEED those fast speeds is when transferring gigabytes worth of data.

At home we have been living with 1.5 mbps DSL for years and it has been workable. I can even work from home with that speed but I sure do not do file transfers. We are now trying Ubitfi and my best data is that at our house we are seeing 8 mpbs. We would be happy if CenturyLink would provide us with 6 or 10 mpbs but they will not do so. We would be dancing in the streets with 200 mpbs service. :cool2::dance1::laughing::laughing::laughing: Well, no we would not, because for the most part, nobody in the house would notice the faster speeds but me when I did large file transfers. :D

Dan

No, I don't need that kind of downstream. 200 probably excess. Just the point of "we're going to give you less" - feels like punishment for not renting their router/modem.

What I did want was the UPSTREAM which is much less than the downstream. The more downstream packages had larger upstream #s too. mrs CMV likes to share lots of pictures on FB or whatever and will upload 30 at a time sometimes. Of course she has no idea how to use photoshop or other editing software so full size large pictures going upstream in batches. Without enough bandwidth there, it will choke HD streaming.

When I VPN into work from home, lack of upstream really brings the work network to a crawl too. So nice to have excess & just not worry about it. At the time I signed up - esp with bundling landline, TV channels, & internet - the cost between the internet speed tiers was pretty insignificant. I think I paid an extra $15/mo for the 300mbps vs whatever their lowest/basic speed was with that package.

I'm not RURAL like most of you guys - I'm in the 4th largest city limits in NC. My land however is in next county, no utilities, and like a WHOLE 15 minutes from closest walmart :) That's the extent of my rural...sorry

My results vary depending on test provider... is this common?

Just now one came back 2.57 Mbps down and 346 Kps up

Immediately I ran Speak Easy and 1.3 Mbps down and .3 up

Very common, that is why a true speed test should be done with your ISP's own speed test. Each ISP will have their own. Once you leave your own ISP for a speed test all bet's are off and results can and will vary widely. Plus for a true test you need to turn off the wifi and do a wired test. Why you ask, because you have no idea what other devices may be connected to the wifi and also a lot of things can interfere with the wifi signal.

All providers use the term "up to", so its up to the max speed. I have up to 6MB and do ok with Roku in HD, but now and then it does start to buffer. We don't watch that much. I just run "speed test" and shows 3.25 down and 0.89 up. This is also going thru my wireless router.

Most folks don't need all the band width. If the family has several users streaming vids then maybe. Hardly anyone is streaming 4K yet and those that do are very limited.

ATT DSL is my service... leaps and bounds over the dial-up I had for 20 years... but I am on the fringe for DSL but received an offer in the mail and I held them to it... had to run new copper for quite a distance to make it work... as a benefit... my voice line problems went away after years of complaining of background noise.

There is no way in **** people are getting 100 mbs through a DSLAM over copper. I don't care how close you are.

They do GBond, two pair. That's how I get 25M a little over 6,000 cable feet away, two 12M lines bonded. It's pretty consistent too, speed tests often come in just above, close to 26. Just a bit closer, one of the neighbor's addresses shows 50M available.

We have done 80 bonded but you have to be real close to the DSLAM. Never seen 100 even attempted. We do 40 over single pair regularly but 10 to 25 is more common. I'm fortunate, all I have to deal with is the fiber.

I just got that bonded service a couple of weeks ago (Frontier Comm), and it is fast for us. Just got 32Mb/s down/3Mb/s up on Speedtest. I am 5000 ft from the Central Office, and less than 10mi from the Silicon Valley. Despite that, we have only had DSL here for 10y, and small hopes for better wires (fiber-optic or coax) from any cable provider.

We just suffered thru a 2-mo internet service outage, and next week, I hope to get our landline back. No landline here for last 2y. I am concerned that Frontier may go bankrupt.

With all the rain where you are it looks like earth movement will keep crews busy around the Bay Area...

Being rural and reading this, I figured I would test ours. 14.7Mbps down and 4.7 Mbps up. We are on an AT&T unlimited data cell plan, using the wireless hotspot. I am currently uploading media to my website while doing the test. Just so you know, we have full signal 4G here at the farm from AT&T. The neighbours all have spotty Verizon cell service. Some drive down the road to near my driveway to make calls. Carrier makes a difference. Take a look at night at the horizon and see if you see any cell tower lights. Then invite friends over and have them check their cell signal, if any have good signal, ask who they use.
