Handguns are used to fight your way to a longgun. That said, modern ammo has come a long way in recent yrs. bullets have become much better at penetration and expansion out of handguns. Years ago the 9mm was considered underpowered but not anymore. and as others have said they are much easier to shoot, especially for those that dont shoot alot.

at the time, the .357 magnum or the .45 acp was the weapon of choice, since they expanded so much, and spent their energy inside the body. the .357 magnum is also supersonic, which was said to make it more effective.. and the .44 magnum was at the time, using bullets so hard that they didn't expand, so they went through the body and so didn't expend their energy inside the body..

The 9MM is / was effective as it was years ago as it is today. "Better" ammo is just a good excuse so you don't have to admit you were wrong to begin with. The shootout in Miami was just plane bad luck, but that doesn't fly when writing a report up.

FYI the .40 came to be because they (FBI) couldn't shoot the 10MM "right" to begin with.

The reality is caliber debates are nothing more than BS. Shoot what YOU feel comfortable with. When a round goes off, people aren't thinking what caliber you're using:laughing:

Convince me not to buy the Glock!

Like any other gun out there, if you find that you like to shoot it and you can hit what you're aiming at, there is no reason for anyone to convice you not to buy it.

That said, I did own a 4" 44 Magnum. Personally, after the first shot, with the recoil (along with fireball depending on lighting conditions), I couldn't really shoot it accurately, so I traded it. You may or may not have the same experience. I can however share my experiences with you

Hits on target are what count in a gunfight. G43 is a fine weapon for CC, my only recommendations are to carry an extra magazine and get training.

I like my Kahr MK9. It is very reliable and accurate.

However get the one that you want.

I like my Kahr. It is accurate. It has been reliable ONCE it had a couple hundred rounds thru it. It is lightweight. BUT, and this is the problem, there are few accessories for it and it is hard to conceal in the situation I need it for. The pistol I am carrying now is a Ruger LCP 380. I can carry it wearing blue jeans and a tucked in T-shirt and you cannot tell I am armed. With the Critical Defense Ammo the little beast is snappy and hard to get back on target for a second shot. With the rental Glock 43 I got my second shot off much, much quicker. Remember what the FBI and the Ellifritz study found. The key to survival in a handgun fight is shot placement and getting a second shot on target as quickly as possible.

It is also worth noting that the FBI has ordered Hornady Critical Duty ammo for duty use. This is a +P 135grain 1110fps round with the rubber insert in the bullet's hollowpoint. Apparently this is the only round that passed their tests involving shooting thru many layers of cloth and still expanding. And the only round that passed the windshield test by staying intact thru glass and expanding after it hit the target.

Personally I think Glocks are ugly things. But what I am looking for is pure functionality (is that a word) to carry in a certain situation where it would have to be deployed quickly from a sitting position. This means a crossdraw holster but concealable.

Well, if it's good enough that it's the only thing the FBI will carry, it's the only thing I will buy. It's got to be the "best of the best!" if it's the only thing a government agency will will use.
